Hi All,

I have a '79.  In the last 2 weeks my power steering has started to make noises that I would describe as "moaning" or a "low whine."  It happens when I turn either left or right.  It gets louder the farther I turn, but it still makes the noise even when I turn it just a little bit.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Did you check the basic stuff, the fan belt tight and the fluid toped up? PG.

Well, the simplest answer is usually the best I believe

. Have you checked the piston that attaches to your power steering control valve (I don't think the 79s had rack and pinion, but I'm not sure.)? It sounds like it may need grease.

Also, check your belt and make sure It's in good condition. When the belt starts to go it tends to make noise. Check your pulley on the power steering pump and make sure it's not loose. I had that happen to me once.

The easiest way to narrow down where your problem is coming from is going to be to put your car up on a lift or jackstands. Start the engine and have a buddy turn the wheel left and right slowly until you can tell where the noise is coming from.

Thanks y'all.  I'll check that stuff out and get back to you.

The GM pumps generally are pretty quiet, your not going to get noise from the other steering components unless their in need of grease or binding on something, I'd start with a new properly adjusted belt and check the fluid for foaming or contamination.
