How do you get the shift knob off? I popped out the button, and removed the retainer ring. The knob wont BUDGE! Is there a set screw? No mention in the GM service manual. Automatic. Thanks for advice.

That's how mine comes off. Probably lots of years and being stuck to the shifter. May have to get physical with it.

Not sure if the 96 is the same but my 93 GM Service manual describes the following:
Remove shifter button by prying up, shift button retainer, snap ring, and shift knob. no mention of set screw w/ the automatic just the manual tranny. I took mine off a while back to replace the light (position indicator) and just strongarmed it loose after a little wd 40 the snap ring attaches around the control lever. Hope this helps.

Hi!! You'll need a set of snap ring pliers and then just enjoy yourself pulling it out! I did it to my '96 to put one of those neat-looking "carbon fiber look" shift knobs. But before I put the new one on,I put a key ring with a little logo that I got at the Air and Space Museum. It reads, "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT"!!!!!
