The mighty C4 got it's first real kill today! I pulled up behind a 2nd gen MR2 at a stoplight, both of us turning left. When the light changed and we made the turn he was holding me back staying under the 45mph limit, so i went around him to pass. As soon as I got beside him he nailed it, the huge fart can making that annoying buzz. Now i couldn't let this one go, so I nailed it and promptly dispatched one rice-not -a -rocket. I had about 5 or 6 lengths on him and let off the gas. He never quit, he went by at full throttle. My Escort was silent and I wasn't about to let 'em go. I punched it again and he quickly learned about sbc torque and hp, I went back by like he was parked. After I slowed back down he wouldn't come even w/me even if I dropped under the limit. I think he was properly ashamed(the blow-past after I slowed down was probably his attempt to be able to tell his buddies he wasted a Vette-TOO BAD!) Just had to share my fun w/y'all!

W/the lack of respect the 84 gets it seems to belong in the "special olympics" according to a lot of the rest of y'all-but I'm enjoyin' it. As far as the ricer goes: he made the move and even an old tech outta date low tech sbc still won out! So it may have been the special olympics in your book but at least a vette still won.! Maybe next time he'll know better than to pick on a C4. I'll be upgrading but in the meantime my crossfire, excepting ram air mod, exhaust, and K&N is still stock.

that era of vette doesnt have the best rep among non-vette people, and many people who dont know anything about cars will simply assume that it "must be slow"...:eek:

a lot of things people dont think about ricers too is that quite a few of them are turbo. even though that might not sound like much, i go to the race meet-ups almost every weekend here in virginia beach and there are guys in turbo civics out here pushin more than 300 hp which in a car as light as it is, would blow the doors off of any stock c4 or c5 for that matter. i dont know wether the mr2 was turbo or not, but if it was, that is a good kill. if not, it was probably still fun.

To a certain extent, the turbo Civics and Neons are fast, but my experience is not as fast as one would think for the measured dyno power . . .

Remember the famous (or notorious) Car and Driver "Fourgasm" issue several years ago? They invited about a dozen+ Japanse, Neon, and German (GTI) tuners to send there best for an all-car shoot out. If you remember the article, you recall that most cost about $50-$80K with all their mods, some had close to 500 HP (claimed) and the best were very fast and fun, while the worst were nearly as fast but very "unfinished" and difficult to drive/unreliable.

Regardless, a half-page sidebar in that article made the following observation: you could take the very best performance figure from all of the tuner fours, regardless of car: the best 0-60 done by any of the,, best quarter mile time, best quarter mile speed, best time around a road course, etc., etc., for the lot regardless of which car did what, and a stock ZO6 C5 (405 HP) of the time would beat all of those figures quite handily. The point they were making is that it is possible to upgrade performance but not really as effective as if you design the car from scratch to have that power.

My own experience is that extreme Civics and Neons (that what i call one with 300 HP) can't use the power. I've heard of but never seen Civics and Neons that will do better than about 13 in the quarter. And I won't race against them at the track or on the street because I had a Neon stray into my lane at the track due to extreme torque steer when he hit his nitrous at about the 60 foot line: only the fact I was already a length ahead saved a nasty accident.

Wish I could claim a turbo kill, unfortunately it was just a "fart can" kill-still fun though. I've seen a few 12 sec civics here, all have many cubic $ in them and when ya talk to these guys they generally go thru their engines enough that they have a spare on the side. You can make almost anything fast and props to some of those guys-they've got some cool machinery. But the same amount of money in a sbc is very, very hard to beat and the Vette definately offers an excellent platform to start from, and even a mild build small block can offer over 450 hp/tq figures with total reliability these days.

Even if someone did do the mods on one of these cars their still not a Vette.. They're a fast crappy 4 banger. I won't even waste my time with one of these. I think it's more of an insult to let 'em go and then smile or laugh at them later on.

I think you can have fun with just about any type of car, from a civic to a corvette. Personally I love American V8s, but then I have to admit the Porsche does damn good with only six 600cc cylinders.

Regardless, one thing I really dislike on a forum is people who diss other person' cars because they personally don't like them, or even worse, someone who is convinced his car is the best in the world: I'm not a fan of hopped up Neons, but I'll leave the Neon fanatics a lone as long as they don't rattle my cage. I love 'vettes, but not enough to see their shortcomings, or the qualities others cars may have.

I appreciate your tolerance and the others on this forum: it makes for a nicer community and more interesting discussions about cars.

I think the big wings and mood lights and over-the-top aero kits some of these ricers put on their cars are ridiculous, but they probably look at my paying $2700/each for custom billet forged Fikse wheels to be stupid (you can buy alot of fiberglass tape-on spoilers for that!) - so to each his own.

one good coment towards the honda is the sheer reliability. My mother had an accord that went through 3 children learning to drive and been driven hard by teenagers, and never had a single problem, sure tires and mufflers but nothing other than routine wear and tear! I wish I could say the same for my S10.

Hi, new to the forum.

Anyway, I can add a different side to this arguement:

I have owned/own both a C5 and a 2nd gen MR2, and absolutely love both cars. The C5 is a blast due to the low end grunt, whereas the MR2 absolutely screams at high RPM. Actually, the MR2 is faster than my C5. (12.0 @ 115.8)

Anyway, the 2nd gen MR2 Turbo's are quickly becoming faster and faster. With the evolution of the standalone EMS systems for these cars, the sky is the limit.

My daily driver is an 01' Corvette with the A4 automatic and my weekend warrior, is a 90' Nissan 240sx with the japanese front end conversion and a 95' 2.0litre turbo motor from a newer generation 240sx from Japan. With a front mount intercooler, Intake, and 3" exhaust system, i'm hitting about 210rwhp on a 2600lb car. Granted, it doesn't have the grunt of my LS1, but the car is a blast to drive, and hits up to it's speed governor of 140mph super easy. Boost comes on strong at 2800rpms and pulls all the way to redline(7500). Granted, I wouldn't trade it for my Vette, but it's a mustang killer just with stock boost and less then half the displacement. The internals are good till 350rwhp before you need to start beefing her up, and with the right turbo, you can still reach boost at a reasonable RPM range. At the 1/8th mile track here in San Diego, my friend's 240sx with the older version of my engine but same mods was consistently keeping pace or beating C5's. If it had been a 1/4 track I'd give the nod to the Vette, but our little 2.0litres do pretty damn good considering.

Of course I know there's no replacement for displacement, and am selling the 240sx and replacing it with a third generation RX-7 and doing an LSX engine conversion for it. But I will miss the boost of a 4cyl.

I dont yet have a Corvette but i do have a car that enjoys beating ricers (not that all of them are bad) I just can't stand it when someone takes a stock civic or neon and put a cold air intake and fart can on it then thinks its fast. My 560sel Mercedes may look slow but it has put a sad face on many civic and neon owners. Even my 300sdl diesel has done it b4 now that is just plain sad. 4000lb car with 148hp but thats the beauty of Torque. Just my two cents.

I have had my 1985 Greenwood vette since 1988 and have had loads of fun with impromptu races on the highway etc. I've beaten many different types of cars and many different types of cars have beaten me. What is the big deal anyway? Why is it that Vette guys and Mustang guys revel in beating anyone they can at any given time. I want you all to know that it makes you look stupid especially when your girl is around; oh no! she's not gonna tell YOU that but that is what she is thinking " he's such a child" is commonly heard.

Oh and the wings??? If someone wants to put a wing on their car, leave them alone about it. . . I think it really boils down to the fact that there are people who really DO want to put a wing on their car, but they don't have the BALLS to do it. They're worried about what their friends will say or how others will look at them. That smacks of insecurity. . . And you know what they say about Vette owners and insecurity. Big Tires, Big Engine, Big Sound, Big Ego, Little DIIIC. . . maybe there's some truth to it.

Most of the time, the guys with the imports are younger and don't have the deep pockets that it takes to own a Vette. I said MOST OF THE TIME, read carefully. . . do you want to fault a young 19 or 21 year old kid who is not making much money and wants his car to look "cool".? What do you want him to do. . . save every penny he has until he can afford a 20,000 car, and then go out and try to mod it up? Get real. . .and grow up! Not everybody can be as cool as you, and we all know that you are just the coolest.

What is most important is that the person driving the car actually likes his car no matter what. If he puts on a big wing, maybe it's because he likes the way it looks.

Anyway, I understand both sides of the arguement here. I would like to point out if I may, that I have (broken now) a pretty quick Neon, with not a whole lot of money in it. It is a 95 sedan with the 132hp single cam motor and highway trans. Weighed 2420 pounds. Everything was stock on it except the intake, springs, and a catback exhaust. It ran 15.74's all day long, which is frickin slow. Then I added a 75 shot on it and it went 13.3's @ 104-105. Total cost was around $1600. Id have to say thats pretty good time drop for the money.

However, Id still rather have a fast rwd v8. Just too bad I have an '81 :(

Wow, yellow C5, I was looking at your earlier post again: that is one hell of a dyno sheet. And that has to be one hell of a kick, as the engine passes through that 500 RPM band where torque goes from about 135 foot lbs to over 300.

Mines got what, 190hp?:( I absolutely love the body and the way it drives, but its just plain slow. But I will keep it. How much power is enough? Well, Ive got a friend with a f-body making around 460hp, and that doesnt excite me a whole lot when Ive gotten on it. Just felt a bit faster than the Neon.

Ya, the EPA really sucked the power out of our babies. Detroit is starting to get it back together, 500+ hp for a '06 Vette. I live in one of only two counties in Nevada that require smog certification. That's changin' soon though, movin' to Idaho in an area that don't require it. I can do some serious mods then.

I know i'm gonna get flammed to hell on this.....especially cause it's my first post.......... So i'll preface this by saying although i don't own one, I am a huge corvette fan. Many of my friends have them......and we all show lots of respect for eachother.......hopefully it carries over here.

But.................don't judge a book by it's cover. You never know what you might be racing against on the street. For those of you who think a 4 cyl. can't be powerful..........guess again, cause they come in all shapes, sizes, and power varieties.

My EVO makes 604/553 to the wheels............and i've taken a few new Z06's with it from a roll and a dig..................

i'm not saying it can beat every vette out there.......but it's rare if i can't hang with anything on the street.

Any car vette or otherwize that produces that much power is respectable. cheers to you for getting that much out of a small engine. I have an old Datsun 280Z that I built. It doesn't have that much power but it sure fools the unsuspecting. and I have given some vettes a run for their money with it. like I said in another post a motor head is a motor head. we all have that in common. cheers.

I for one, love both sides of the Spectrum, Imports and Domestics. Wich brings me to my point....

Some of you guys need a reality check. These "4 bangers" are kicking ass and taking names. For Example, I have an 06 Evo. From a Stoplight, hell, even a Road Course, a Stock C5? My little 4 door family Sedan will eat it up (it is also stock). A stock C6? A fun race, could go either way.

We could all go on for days, and everyone has their opinion....But please, dont sit there behind your computer and act like Vette's are superior cars on the street...Not even close. They are awesome cars, if they werent, I wouldnt have one. But just because your driving one doesnt mean you should throw up your chin and turn your back on an Import. If you do, you may be on the other side of this tale, and I would be reading this on an import forum, trying to defend Corvette's :D

I love just about all cars and think the EVO and the STi are great: carrying on the tradition of the great rally cars like Lancia. I'd like to own an EVO or an STi, but I really have no where to put it -- I have room (and wifely tolerance) for only one more car around here and that will be a Sunbeam Tiger when I can find a good one.

Anyway, to the point here, I've seen a lot of matches between stock C5s and EVOs -- it is always a good race and and seems to depend on what the race is and the drivers -- EVOs are very quick off the line with their 4-wheel drive, and if the driver shifts quickly they are damn quick from a start up to about 45-50. But they have the aerodynamics of a brick and they run out of revs and gears just about where an M6 shifts into 5th. So a C5 will be at a disadvantage off the line, but C5s are are about the best "3rd gear car" I've seen, gobs of torque and a wonderful ratio that allows them to outpull just about anything: if a vette can't win by the top of third, chances are it won't.

So, if it is a short race from a standing start the EVO is tough to beat, but if it is a long race (1/4 mile or more) or a street race from a rolling start, an M6 C5 is a bit faster and an automatic is about an even match: in fact I saw an LT4 C4 (stock as far as I know - no obvious mods) edge an EVO out at the strip -- think it surprised both drivers, but it really shouldn't have, given that the LT4 gives away only 10 HP to the C5. A C6? A real uphill battle for the EVO: other than jumping off the line a few lengths and then shutting down and declaring victory at about 50 mph, I would expect it to get beat about 8 times out of ten in the quarter mile.

I just speak from personal experience in my area. My Evo also has the M6, not the M5 as most. Either way, stock for stock a C5/Evo are very evenly matched. C6 is pretty close (tho I would expect it to win by a few yards most of the time), close enough I feel the the Driver would have alot to do with it. But, as I said, everyone has their own personal opinions/experiences.
I just think its disturbing that alot of people Cant respect the "other" choices in cars....I think it was said earlier that "picking on 4 bangers is like competing in the special olympics". You may be right, but what happens when little Timmy blows your doors off? I guess the "special" kids arent so slow afterall...lol

Ive got both, and I love them equally in their own right, and show both Party's respect, as they deserve.

I, too, have a lack of respect for any auto enthusiast who can't respect what other people like in the way of cars, and who can't find something to like or at least be interested in in any car.

I think the problem that EVO and STI drivers face, along with those of a few other Japense cars (Turbo Supra, etc.) is they get painted with the same brush as all the guys who have a Civic with air dams and wings and underbody neon --- and a stock engine. I'm pretty tolerant, but I find those folks hard to understand and their cars (and attitude) annoying. There is one particularly loathsome Civic around here that has ground effects rocker panels and front facia and a rear wing higher that the roof, and dual cannon mufflers (only one is connected) and slots in the fenders and scoops on the hood and the rear fenders, and decals, and best of all an "Interfooler" (I'm not kidding, someone actually makes a fake Intercooler you can put up in the front end behind the grill, with sticky tape, where it shows so folks think you have a Turbo under the hood). I, too, have a lack of respect for any auto enthusiast who can't respect what other people like in the way of cars, and who can't find something to like or at least be interested in in any car.

I think the problem that EVO and STI drivers face, along with those of a few other Japense cars (Turbo Supra, etc.) is they get painted with the same brush as all the guys who have a Civic with air dams and wings and underbody neon --- and a stock engine. I'm pretty tolerant, but I find those folks hard to understand and their cars (and attitude) annoying. There is one particularly loathsome Civic around here that has ground effects rocker panels and front facia and a rear wing higher that the roof, and dual cannon mufflers (only one is connected) and slots in the fenders and scoops on the hood and the rear fenders, and decals, and best of all an "Interfooler" (I'm not kidding, someone actually makes a fake Intercooler you can put up in the front end behind the grill, with sticky tape, where it shows so folks think you have a Turbo under the hood). All this . . . and a car with about 100 HP, but a driver with a 500 HP attitude.

I agree Lee, if it goes fast I like it. Still fun to remind 'em cubic inches are not to be dismissed lightly! I had a 4AGE Corolla GT-S (4.50 posi-rwd, 5spd, DOHC 16v and TVIS) before "ricers" were cool! Raced it, auto-x'd it and generally drove the hell out of it back when they were new.

I really wish you guys wouldn't call us or our cars ricers! Its like calling a short person a midget. Just because you aren't very tall doesn't make you a midget, and just because you drive an import doesn't make you a ricer. They are "vertically challenged" and we are "import enthusiasts" LOL To tell you the truth most "import enthusiasts" don't like ricers. Big boeing 747 wings, neon underglow kits and mufflers that sound like a swarm of killer bees with a honey badger near. No, not me, I have a 600 whp full leather interior 4 door Integra. My car looks bone stock, and sounds bone stock, until 4600 rpm when V-tec kicks in, which in turn makes my T67 get angry. Dynographs go vertical from that point to 9600 rpm. She will rev to 11,000, but starts to stop making power at about 9400 so there's no need to take her that high. She will make about as much power as I want her to, (maxing at about 1000whp with a much bigger turbo and spray to get it spollin'). V-tec won't do the job then!! LOL She does low 11 second 1/4 mile traps at over 130mph with my sorry ass driving. A good driver would probably run mid to low 10's. Mind you this is a 4 door full leather cd player sunroof and all the trimmings. The top of the line model. So the next time you find yourself at a stoplight having cruel thoughts about a "ricer", remember that you just might be lined up against someone like me, an "import enthusiast" and might find youself in a terrible nightmare.

There is a HUGE difference between a "ricer" and a true "enthusiast" in my humble opinion. These kids in their Civics with the cans, stickers, spoilers and 24" rims are everywhere these days in my city. Just the day before yesterday, two of them were chased and caught on our main highway here at a busy time, traffic-wise, doing well north of 100mph in and out of traffic. The cops chased them for miles before they pulled over, and apparently they almost killed more than one person during their "hi speed run". This sort of activity gives Honda Civic owners, right out the gate, a REAL bad reputation here in my city. REAL BAD.

Vette's are fast but saying that 4 bangers are all a joke and a waste to race is just flat out wrong. First off a stock Neon SRT4 would hand a stock C4 it's ars! Here's a challenge for all the import folks: show me a normally aspirated 4 cylinder pumpin' out north of 350 ft lbs of torque, that if well maintained can go for 500,000 miles without crackin' the mill open. Ain't gonna happen.

Sure, you can dump $100k into computer equipment and turbos and intercoolers and all that, out yer butt for a Civic, and probably get it to the 300hp area at 12,000 rpm, BUT.... it'll still only have 75 ft lbs of torque, will be completely undriveable because it's so pipy, and will last 30,000 miles at most before needing to be pulled apart and rebuilt....

It just don't cut it for me.

I just don't like it when people are closed minded and think what they have is the only way to go. I'll say the same thing on an import forum when they are flaming domestics. Yes the sound of a Hemi cuda is breathtaking. I lined up next to one at the track this weekend. I admit I was scared. The beautiful rumble of that V-8 was actually shaking me inside in the staging lanes. His cheater slicks were damn near wide as my car, but when the lights came down and all was said and done. My 4 door full leather interior integra had run a 11.4 @ 130mph to his 11.9 @ 111mph Yes it was expensive, I've put 20 grand under my hood, but unreliable? Only because most people throw a motor together and don't take tha time to do it right. My car has been running strong for 8 months, beating on it constantly. If mom in her minivan takes off to fast its C-ya. LOL. Anyway I really want a vette BAD. Don't know if I ever will have one, but if I do I'll appreciate it just as much as my teg.

Here, as an example of fast vehicles that are of no interest to the general muscle car population, I present you with the 12sec Dodge MiniVan (http://www.turbominivan.com/members/terry/). This guy paid $150 for the vehicle. Yes; that's right, 150 bucks. Then he made some mods to it; a rather short list, really. And it pulls 12s 1/4's at well north of 100mph. You should line up yer 'Teg against this thing, and see who wins.

Please don't lump everyone into the same category. I don't think that's a fair statement at all.

If you review this thread, you will find that *most* (not all) posts in this thread are in reference to someone who has come onto a Corvette board and lipped off. You have to admit, there is a stereotype out there for import tuner folks, JUST LIKE THERE'S A STEREOTYPE FOR CORVETTE OWNERS. Stereotypes come about from people's experience with a large portion of a particular group. One person does not make for a stereotype, and never in my 40 years on this planet have I seen a stereotype that comes about from a complete group.... all it takes it a handful of experiences, and the stereotype is formed.

I am the stereotypical Corvette owner. To the bones. BUT, a lot of folks on this board are not. Personally, I couldn't give a flyin' whichamacallit if youse guys call me an over the hill redneck; that tag actually fits somewhat.

If you are a "true sports car enthusiast" as opposed to a kid who tapes on a coffee can to his muffler and places stickers all over his car and then drives up and down the highways at 120mph, then you don't fit into the "ricer" category. If you do behave like this, then quite honestly you do. Don't take it personally.

I haven't posted back here because I don't feel it necessary to respond to name calling and such. Apparently I must have touched a nerve. I never once knocked a corvette or called the people who drive them "queers". As a matter of fact, I think the C6 Z06 is the best bang for the buck car on the planet right know. You say with the amount of money that I spent a V8 would run single digits. My passes were made in low boost 500whp, on 25/8/13inch slicks with a crappy driver.....(ME). The car will definitely run 10's the next time down the track. If I decide to get some 28/10 inch slicks and put my car in high boost 600whp she will definitely do single digit passes. Stephan Papadakis went 8's with less power in his "RICER". He now does 6's and a full body car like mine has gone 7's. A girl no less....Stephanie Eggum. BTW, my car still gets 20-25 mpg.

My car still gets 30mpg on the highway lol about 9 in the city and about 2 when I jump on it, and yes im on low boost 5psi to be exact and yes im a crappy driver aswell. I'd like to run my car on the 1/4 and get an exact time but altitude sucks, lots of power loss from the engine to the tires and I cant afford slicks. What year is your integra and careful with the high boost. I know a guy who had like a 97 teg I think and he went up to around 600 ish whp and blew the crap out of his engine.

But, I know some "Ricers" who think that since drifting is coming to America and that Japanese cars are more affordable and similar things, that they are the best and that American cars are old, low tech cars. I think they are freaking crazy. I also know some American muscle owners that have their heads stuck so far up their rich @$$e$ that they can't see past the wrinkles to see that America and Europe don't make the only cars anymore. Sure, I'm not a fan of rice-burners, but I do respect the people that have them, just so long as they respect me. If most people could atleast clean their @$$e$ long enough to see that people just want some respect and maybe a compliment every now and then, we would all get along a whole lot better.

Its just I am use to the guys at my skool talking **** about muscle ect ect ect.....I always have an agressive attitude. Dont take it personal. I just look out for people that are close and I feel VERY close to the forum members here....for the most part.....because its kind of like a second family becuz no one has a "sports car" to this extent. EXACTLY!!! I havent met a nice import driver yet.....Cept the one on here. I am not used to import people beinig polite to me and...................list goes on. LOLOL ROFFLMAO on the rich people stuck up there @$$es........

We've got a tuner shop next door; most of the patrons are pretty idiotic, but some of them are actually working on some pretty cool projects; not my taste, mind you, but you HAVE to respect the project... but I have to say, none of those guys I respect have a fart can installed, and there are no stickers on their cars whatsoever....

With that being said, we've got this clown here in town, runnin' a Pontiac Trans Am; I'd guess it's about a 1978.... it's painted flat black, and he has shackles on the backend, so the back of the car has to be at least 6.5 feet in the air.... it looks terrible. Of course, it's running the customary 305 with about 500,000 well used miles on it... I refer to it as the "James Bond T/A" due to the built-in smokescreen... he runs around like he's got the fastest car in town.

And, yes, he's got a mullet. :D

Even though you can't make it to vegas, you will get to see about how your car would do against mine. My friend Brian out here has a 483rwhp supercharged C5 Z06 and he wants to run me just to see how he'll do. I'll get it on video for you.
I just had the rematch with the C6 Z06 and this time I beat him by five cars. I ran the whole race in low boost. He made 499rwhp with lg headers and tune. That's simply amazing.....60rwhp by strapping on headers. The C6 Z06 is an amazing platform.
I think he's getting a 100 shot of spray now for our next race. That will be 600+rwhp!!! I don't think I'll be able to beat him with that, because I can only use high boost in 4th and 5th gears. By then he will probably be too far ahead of me to catch him before the end of the race.

I'm back bitches..... Just Kidding LOL..... Well just in case anybody cares the race never took place. When we were lined up and ready to go, I did a burn out before getting on the freewaylike I always do.... and my 2000 dollar clutch decided it had had enough. I know you probably think its stupid to do a burn out before a roll race...... but trust me if I don't..... my car will light up the tires even at 70 mph.

Well after a month of fighting with clutchmasters..... they finally sent me a brand new clutch. While I was waiting I decided to re-ring my car and add all new seals. So as soon as I have 1000 miles on her the race is back on. I don't know if any of you have ever driven a 650hp vette, but that was fun. I'm pretty sure he still has it, so if you have an extra 45 grand laying around that'll be a fun purchase.
