View Full Version : Question about my lights!
Str8upChevy 11-28-2006, 06:02 AM After looking in the Photo Gallery, I noticed that Peace-Maker's black C5 has the parking lights on without the headlight doors open. On mine, when I turn the headlight switch to parking light position, my headlight doors come up but the headlights don't come on. I usually drive my cars around with the parking lights on 24/7, except I didn't really like the look of the doors being open during the day.
Is there something wrong with my lights or do I need to do some kind of modification to it so that the headlight doors stay down with the parking lights in the on position?
riley 11-28-2006, 12:22 PM I think that the lights in those pictures are the DRLs (Daytime Running Lights).
gorichb 11-28-2006, 01:06 PM I agree
and they are on all the time.

I understand that, but the DRL's are only the front corners. Mine work fine as soon as I start the car. I'm referring to the rear lights that are on. In order to get my rear lights to come on, I have to turn the headlight switch to the "parking light position". Once I do that, my headlight doors pop up but don't come on.
I'm wanting to drive my car around with both the DRL's on as well as the rear taillights but not have the headlight doors up. This is what I'm referring to as far as PEACMKR's gallery pictures. Look at the last picture in his gallery. (#295) His rear lights are on but the headlight doors are down.
Should my headlight doors open when I turn the parking lights on?
gorichb 11-28-2006, 05:28 PM Oh Ok
Hmmmmmmm
Calling PEACMKR.... Help us out here.
bobalou 11-28-2006, 07:05 PM I had a problem with my motors for a while and it did that too. The stock way they work is if you turn your parking lights on only, the headlights should not come up. If you turn your headlights on first, then go down to parking they will stay up. Maybe someone here can tell you how to fix it or adjust something but I think yours should be working like I mentioned.
Str8upChevy 11-28-2006, 09:17 PM Right on, thanks a lot for the information guys. I didn't think they were suppose to actually open up when I turned the parking lights on, and now that you mentioned the part about a motor or something being wrong with it, that would make sence. The driver side motor makes a growling sound after I turn the headlights off and it continues for about 10-15 seconds. It sounds almost as if a gear is stripped, except the door opens and closes just fine.
I guess this one's gonna take the dealership to fix. [>:]
bobalou 11-28-2006, 10:57 PM That is what mine was doing, its running until the time- out closes the circuit. I asked the dealer and they said its probabaly just out of adjustment. I never had to fix mine because I got cought in a sand storm and they replaced them with new ones. it was a bit embarassing if you pull up somewhere and they hear that, haha. You may even be able to get info on adjusting them yourself but like I said I didn't have to do mine so maybe someone else knows more.
gorichb 11-28-2006, 11:12 PM Man!
How bout that. I just tried mine, and you can turn the parking lights on without the headlights popping up.

That was some very good information you left there buddy as it's exactly what my problem is. I especially liked Brent Frankers page with all the in-depth explaining of things. I've used his "Fix-it Guide" page many times in the past for my '96 Z28, but I wasn't aware of this particular problem before having never had this type of headlight set-up. The only cars I've ever had with pop-up headlights were the early 80's RX-7's and the '88 Fiero GT's. (They all worked fine though)
So, thank you very much for leaving those links in regards to this common problem with C5 headlight motors. I'll be ordering one of those kits for $45.00 and fixing it myself instead of paying the dealership 200-300 bucks to do it. :D

They certainly are, and since I ordered this replacement gear, I figured I should correct the problem that started it. When I bought the car last month, I didn't notice that the driver side headlight door was out of alignment. It wasn't out by much, in fact unless you were looking specifically at the front of the door lid, it was un-noticable. It was actually touching the front bumper cover and sticking as it was closing. After about 30 minutes of adjusting, it now lines up perfectly and operates as it should. Unfortunately the gear is still stripped though so it must be replaced. [&:]
