The valve covers on my recently purchased 1987 are brown... is this original ?

I believe so. Mine are "baby S***t" brown too. Powder Coated I think. You'ld think they would have chosen a better color.

Yup! Only thing they're missin' is a pic of lincoln's beard on driver's side, and his memorial on the passenger side.

...although I never looked on the INSIDE!!!

My 86 has that look (ugly powder coat brown copper bronze)on valve covers also.

They are supposed to be silver. They turn brown with age and heat.

Mech is right on as usual. I have actually seem them turn pink. Mine are silver but starting to change around the oil fill hole and dip stick ware oil was dripped on them.
Remove,clean & paint
Have fun

I think Mid America or Ecklerssell the correct Magnesium colored spray paint to return them to silver. I thought I heard back in the day that they actually were clear coated Magnesium and it is the clear that turns brown, or pink.:)Good winter project Eh?
