View Full Version : What the hell is in my transmission?
noreason 12-02-2007, 06:42 PM Went to change the trans fluid and when i stuck my finger in the drain hole I noticed there was something in there...
I'm not sure what it is but its round with a hole in the center like a washer... Transmission worked fine but I'm not going to drive this thing until I figure out what the hell happened.
Any ideas on what this is would be appreciated.

blueshark 12-02-2007, 09:02 PM in automatic trannies, at the factory they put a plug in the fill tube to keep contamination from getting in and it stays there until they fill the tranny with fluid. the filling tool and fluid pushes the plug into the pan and there it stays until the first fluid change. I acquired a car once with 85,000 miles on it and changed the fluid and it must have been the first change because the plug was in still in the pan. Not sure about standard trannies. If it is a washer, which it looks to be,than something is amiss in the box. You may have to drop it and pull the cover. What year is it and what tranny is it? Cheers
Yikes!
Is that one of those gas mileage additives?
Seriously, is it loose in there? Maybe a shim washer that slid off, before a shaft went all the way throughsome parts. Maybe a shift rail in the linkage...
If it feels completely smooth on both sides, it probably fell through without goin' through the gears.
noreason 12-02-2007, 09:15 PM Sorry the trans is doug nash 4+3 manual trans in a 1987.
The washer/shim feels completely smooth on both sides and shows no sign of being ran through any gears or anything else.
blueshark 12-02-2007, 09:45 PM Well, I'd say it's not supposed to be there and you would need to remove it and find out where it belongs before you drive it any more. you may have just been lucky to this point. Good luck with it. Cheers

[sm=goodidea.gif]You need to check it out fully. How is it shifting? With something in there, it would seem that it would not shift properly.
LeesVette 12-03-2007, 10:09 AM Just like they said over at Corvette Forum - its probably a thrust washer.

Whats is it for?
86 Ironhead 12-04-2007, 07:42 PM If itlooks like a big flat washer, it is part of the reverse gear cluster. (inside dimension of washer hole is about 1 inch). If it looks plastic, it is probably part of the pressure relief valve, which is located just above the cover plate on the drivers side. It is possible to remove the side cover plate, without removing the tranny, and you might be able to get your fingers inside to scoop it out. Not to much else it can be.
noreason 12-05-2007, 04:15 PM Whats the best route to take on that? if i remove the linkages can i just pop the side cover off? do things have to line up? I'd rather not have to remove the trans, so anyone with advice on getting the washer out without removing it, I could use it. Thanks again.
blueshark 12-05-2007, 06:34 PM Can't really tell the size of it from the picture but will it fit thru the fill hole? At least then you may be able to tell what it is and where it may have come from. Perhaps you might use magnet to remove it but you will still need to find out where it came from and why it's not in it's proper place. I would hate for you to lock up your tranny and rip the drive shaft out or the rear end. Itreally isn't safe to drive. Please be careful with it. Cheers

You can rip the driveshaft off the car? What would happen if that did happen and you were doing say 65 mph? That is pretty scary.
blueshark 12-05-2007, 08:14 PM Sure can! If the tranny locks up itcould twist the drive shaft off like a beer can. Depending where it snaps it could jam in the road and possibly pole vault the car or tear out the rear end or come up thru the rear deck or puncture the fuel tank or....... Saw it happen in a friendsTrans Am whenI was a kid. Tranny atethird gear and locked up tighter than a gnat's ass. Really messed up a beautiful '69 TA and left a trench in the road, not to mention the stinky mess in the drivers seat. Cheers
86 Ironhead 12-06-2007, 11:29 PM Try this site. http://www.5speeds.com/dne.htm
Also this is a break down of the Super T-10, which is the gear box. Doug nash used the Super T-10 and bolted there 2 speed overdrive to its rear. Here is a parts break down for the tranny. Very helpful. It would be nice to make this thread a stick for these website links. http://www.richmondgear.com/07pdfs/RG25.pdf
I have taken my cover off before while tranny is in car, but it is very tight. Look at diagram (PDF Link)and identify the part you see inside. My guess is it is #6 in the diagram.
1974corvetteowner 12-09-2007, 11:09 PM this may be a stupid question but i know the "old time" transmission guys would put a magnet in the bottom of a transmission to collect any metal or shaving from the transmission would this "washer" be a magnet?
blueshark 12-10-2007, 08:28 PM Doesn't look like it, but you never know. Cheers
