Default Change your differential fluid

I bought my 96 LT1 2 1/2 years ago and have been maintaining it myself since. I recently changed the differential fluid and it was like water. This tells me that it hasn't been done by the previous owner. I am going to now assume that the previous owner did nothing for preventative maintenance. For those of you who have not yet changed your differential fluid may want to consider. Remember to include the additive for limited slip along with standard rear end grease. Other fluids may require changing as well!

Good luck.

that is an excellent point. i worked as a tech for a while, and you would be amazed at how people will even modify a car, yet never bother with maintaining the rear diff. while it doesnt need to be done as often as a motor oil change, it needs to be taken care of. good call c44me.

My Vette has 60k miles on it. I work as a Service advisor for a Nissan Dealership and used the lift in the shop. None of the mechanics had the right tool to loosen the filler plug so I finally just grabbed a crescent wrench and loosened it. It requires an allen tool but very small because the work area is really tight. It wasn't that bad when using the lift. It would have been hell without. The problem with these cars is that there is not much room to work on them. I remember changing the oil for the first time by lifting the car with a floor jack. That was a PITA. Remember to open the hood, rear hatch and both doors when lifting the Vette to avoid body cracks.

I use one of the drive on lifts at work. (I'm in the military and they have an auto hobby shop, great deal for the military). It truly is a PITA to work under these cars without a lift. Always take your time, if you're finding that you have limited time and need to rush, wait and do it when you have more time or adjust your schedule.

Haste makes waste! Ask me how I know...

CORRECTION - I found out that opening everything is incorrect. The actual rigidity of the body is compromised when the doors, hatch and top is open. I apologize for giving incorrect information. Several mechanics advised me of this but I was recently corrected by a certified Corvette Mechanic with over 20 years experience. Any lift can be used and Vettes can be lifted just like any car. I prefer the drive on lift though. By the way, does anyone out there have a lift in their residential garage? I have priced some 2 post 9klb lifts under $3000 installed by Hunter.
Thanks!

Hi
Newbie to the forum.

I saw an ad in the corvette central cataloque that described a tap kit for the differential, has anyone tried this, and if so, is it hard to install?? I recently swapped gears on my 91 from 2:59 to 3:54's and I want to be pro-active about the diff. fluid.
