C4 1992 - Emergency Brake Stuck in "SET" Position

:( I recently purchased a very clean 92 that has always been garage kept and has never seen rain or fowl weather. The first time I tried to set the emergency brake, it stuck on and will not release.

Question(s):
1) Has anyone every had this happen? Is there an easy way to release the brake so that I can move the vehicle to a hoist and do a proper inspection?
2) Has anyone every had anything other than a cable cause this type of a problem? I am wondering if the problem might be at the brake handle. Thanks

I think what your problem may be is that you have to pull up on the brake release at the same time as you push the button on the top of the arm. If you don't do that, the release can be pushed down so you can get out of the car and the brake will still be engaged. The same thing happened to me. If I'm not too clear on this, your owner's manual more than likely explains it. If your car didn't come with one, I STRONGLY suggest you get one. Good Luck.

Thanks beauchampgl .... I am travelling for another four days but plan to try your suggestion as soon as I get home. The manual doesn't really make it clear how to release the brake properly so, I am hoping I did it wrong and that all parts of the system are working correctly.Thanks again!! I will post my results.

:D As a follow-up ....... I was able to play with the brake handle/button and finally got the brake to release. Thanks for all the tips.

No problem. Glad to help. You may want to squirt some silicone lube or penetrating oil on the button and the insides of the brake handle and base as well as penetrating oil on the emergency brake lines to lube them up a bit.

Also, you may want to pull the seat fabric out of the way each time you use it. Over time the rubbing against the seat will wear it away. Kinda like mine [:@].

I actually had my release break on mine and had to replace the whole assembly. I was able to pull the plastic cover up after removing the DS seat cushoin an release the dog with a screwdriver. Mine was kinda sticky like this before it finally failed to release completly.

Ha !! Just noticed the "fowl" weather myself .... oh well must be another case of "brain-freeze". Anyway, all systems are now "go" and I am enjoying the new vette. Thanks to all of you for your follow-up and good advice. This is a great site. I wish I could get this type of good advice for my 1960 Chevy.
