I am about to start building an engine for my vette. I have a 350 block with the casting number 3970010 4 bolt main. I believe it is out of a truck...my question is will a standard oil pan work for the vette...or did the corvettes have a different oil pan

Not sure about a SBC but the BBC vette oil pan is rear sump with two small indentations on either side of the front of the deep section. They are there to clear the steering. you could set the bare block in place with the pan on it to see if it clears. Just a thought. The steering is the only issue I can think of. Do you still have the original pan? Cheers

 

yes i still have the original pan...it is on the engine in the car still...just thought i would ask and see if anyone knew if there was a difference

 

This is just a guess but I think that because of the close proximity of the steering, the SBC pan for the Corvette is a specific Corvette only pan.

 

For sure Corvette specific when it comes to a BB.
What is in your Vette now, or do you not have an engine from it?
Ya might get a Vette pan from the parts store, if it matches the one on the engine you're rebuilding, take it back and get your money. Or,....take your pan down and compare it to one.
Let's see,.....hmmmmm,.......parts,....parts,....I may have a couple around that I can pair up with the 350 that came out of the Starship. If I find a match, I'll let ya know.

 

Hey 74, I'm also in the process of puttin' together a new mill for my C3, my vette is a 1978 L-48 automatic. The motor I'm building is from a 1/2 ton two wheel drive - 1975. It's also a 3970010 four bolt, I punched it out .030 over and put in a 3.75 stroker crank to give me 383 cu. in. The factory oil pan from the truck is the same depth as the L-48 pan and the steering will have no problem clearing. I bought a new pan from Summit 'cause the truck pan was in rough shape, just a stock style pan that is almost identical to factory. If the factory steering didn't change from your '74 to my '78 then you shouldn't have any issues with the truck pan.

 

Thanks for the info Buckshot...I thought the truck pan looked similar but was not 100% sure.
What kind of compression ratio are you going for? and what kind of pistons are you going to use?

I dug out a pan from a 400 that came out of a 2 ton truck. Looks like a match to the pan on my 350. Now I ain't sayin that all SB pans will fit, but I think the odds are in your favor.

 

Hi Doug, I'm using Keith Black Hyperutectic pistons, They are flat tops with one valve relief so you have to match them to the correct bank. The heads are early seventies stock cast iron that I c.c.'d and matched to 74 c.c.'s. After running the compression ratio formula I ended up with 9.48:1, that is what I was shooting for and didn't want to go over 9.5:1. The crank is an Eagle cast steel, internally balanced so I can use all the 350 external parts, oh ya, I'm using the factory 5.7 in. steel rods.

 

Sounds like you have a nice set up there. I am still in the planning stage with my engine. I plan to bore it .030 over. I have a set of late 70's heads with1.94 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves.I plan to CCthe heads. I still have not decided wheather i am going to put a stroker crank in or keep a stock 350 crank. I am still lookingaround forpistons.
What kind of wrist pins are you using, free floating or pressed?
