I have developed an oil leak in my 2000 Corvette with 140K miles. It has an automatic trans. It appears to be the rear main seal, but before I take on that "little" project, I thought I would ask if anyone has any other ideas as to what could be leaking the oil. It does appear to be inside the bell housing from what I can see through the little inspection port on the bottom, but it is also on the outside of the bell housing area. It drips directly onto the exhaust pipe, and emits an embarrassing plume of smoke every time it is parked. I would hate to go through all that work only to find that it was leaking someplace else...

I intend to replace the rear cover plate gasket at the same time, not just the seal.
The local parts place has 2 kits available. 1 from Victor, 1 from Felpro. Price is about the same. Has anyone used either of these, and if so did you have any problems? I don't even want to do this once, let alone do it over because of faulty parts.

 

I did some more digging, and found another forum with a thread that appears to be the answer that I was praying for. The post is by member ZZ28ZZ, and has a very good explanation of the problem he is having, and lots of excellent photos and information to go with it.
