ITS THE ABS SENSORS THAT OR OUT ON THE WHEELS!!

 

I had the same problem about 6 months ago on my 2001. Then the battery died (the original from 2001) and when I replaced the battery, the messages stopped.

 

This happened to me about 3 weeks ago. The active handling went off once while going 70mph straight and 4 times making a right turn. I looked up the codes and most said the steering sensor, long story short. I took it to the dealer he test drove it and sure enough it came on for him. He checked and called detroit and it turned out to be the right steering wheel sensor., it had moisture in it, he also checked the left which was dry. Since my car has never seen water he said the moisture came from the concrete garage floor and said to put cardboard down to help absorb the moisture. He also put that electrical grease in both sensors and the problem has gone away. I sent a letter to both Chevy and to the US dept of transportation to make them aware of it, since it can cause an accident by applying the brakes at 70mph, I know the guy behind me had to change his pants! and thought the grease should be put in the sensors at the time of building the car since most people store the cars on concrete floors. HELP!!!! I have a 2000 Corvette not a 2001 -or newer, ABS Fixer does not repair the 2000 model, the Unit is discontinued by GM,Any other ideas???

I have a beautiful 2000 C5 with less than 18,000 miles on it. My late husband purchased it for his Bucket List when he got sick, eventually blessing me with it..... A few Days ago my Dash lit up like a Rocket...DIC codes are, Service ABS, Service Tire Monitor System and Active Handling System.
Then the only way I could stop it the other day was to turn off the key....I'm worried to take it to the Dealership because I can't afford to get soaked. Its a White Convertable with the Oak Top, and I use it in shows to raise $ for Cancer Events. (Lost my Husband to C). Any wisdom or help from you would sure be appreciated. I need to get it back in the Show Ring, ...Think its the EBCM?

 

Hello, Kindred - sorry to see about your husband. The first thing you should do is check the fault codes by following the instructions on this site:

Error code C1214 is typically an indication that the EBCM has failed. Unfortunately, no EBCMs in Corvettes that are year 2000 and older can be repaired and no one sells them (as mentioned, above in BJCorvette's post). If you are in CA, you may be able to get an exemption from Smog testing if the part needed to fix a smog violation is no longer available. In any case, be careful that you don't drive on wet roads or just drive too aggressively, as your ABS and active handling may not be functional.
The tire monitor warning may mean that one or more of your tire sensor batteries is depleted and needs changing. The entire sensor may need to be replaced, but check display codes to be sure.

 

This all began when I replaced the Runflats with Cumos. The tire monitor warning light came on. I took it to Garber Chevy in GCS, Fl. , and they wanted over $500 saying the computer was bad. I never ever before had any issues. After they fussed with it, I drove it home (30 Miles), and the dash codes lit up the DIC. Only way to stop it was turn off the key in the ignition. Yep...I'm sad.

 

I would find either another dealership or a Corvette specialty shop that is recommended by folks in your area. But first, try to get the fault codes.
