Thanks PG!

Mine came up as May 10, 1979.

I wonder what I was doing that day?

April 9, 1973 which is about right as I picked it up April 17, 1973.  Checked the build order that I found in the car and it said 4-10-73.

Thanks so much, pg!  August 21, 1980 is the date I came up with.  (I'm still waiting for the info from the "Bowling Green, Ky. Plant.")  I was in my 35th. day of being stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, as I had left Baumholder, Germany on May 26th., taken leave at home in New York then headed to Texas.  Thanks not just for the info on my car, but also for reminding me of the great memories about the care-free days in my mid-twenties.

I do have a question about the "9th. character" in the VIN, the one that has a question mark in it's place on the "birthday site."  In my GM Corvette manual, in the breakdown of the VIN, it explains the "9th. character" only as; "check number."  Does anyone know what that number is all about?
  Thanks again.

The "check number" is a number used to varify that the vin number is correct and has not be changed The check digit for a VIN is obtained through a number of mathematical steps. Each letter used in a VIN has a corresponding number value, while numbers stay the same. Therefore, the VIN becomes a string of 17 numbers (with a space in the ninth position, where the check digit goes). Each position in the VIN has a weight -- the number of times that digit is multiplied.
