Plant.")  I was in my 35th. day of being stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, as I had left Baumholder, Germany on May 26th., taken leave at home in New York then headed to Texas.  Thanks not just for the info on my car, but also for reminding me of the great memories about the care-free days in my mid-twenties.     I do have a question about the "9th. character" in the VIN, the one that has a question mark in it's place on the "birthday site."  In my GM Corvette manual, in the breakdown of the VIN, it explains the "9th. character" only as; "check number."  Does anyone know what that number is all about?   Thanks again. < Message edited by Texas Jim -- 12/4/2007 3:50:03 AM > (in reply to C3 Starship) Post #: 9

Each letter used in a VIN has a corresponding number value, while numbers stay the same. Therefore, the VIN becomes a string of 17 numbers (with a space in the ninth position, where the check digit goes). Each position in the VIN has a weight -- the number of times that digit is multiplied. (in reply to Texas Jim) Post #: 10
