Hey Guys,

My 61 does not charge at idle, only at 2500 and up on the RPM.  I pulled the generator and order new brushes for it, but it is filthy inside and looks like it has rust on the main slats.  Should I clean it and if so what should I use?

thanks,  Dennis

I'm no expert, but first I would try some air and blow it out.  If that doesn't seem to work, try some CRC (electrical contact cleaner) and wash it out with that.  Also, check the armature where the brushes ride.  Make sure the gaps between the metal contacts are clean.  Use an old toothbrush to clean them.  Also, if it is worn down to where the brushes have made much of a groove, there may not be enough material on the contacts to work properly.  Be sure the brushes are not worn down to where there is no distance (offset) between the top of the contacts and the area they are mounted on.  When you look at it, I think you will see what I mean.  You might also check out your voltage regulator.  Good luck.
