I am new to the corvette deal, I have vin number for a car I am looking to purchase. Can I use this to determine what the car originally came with (engine, trans, body color, etc.) or do I need the build sheet.

What would a 1970 corvette coupe be worth, good mechanical condition, needs paint, not original engine? The car is currently 350 ci with auto trans, the owner states that it originally was a 4spd car (clutch pedal and linkage still in car) but does not know what engine it came with. The car runs and drives good just needs to be repainted, and some tlc.  I think I can buy it for about 9K is it worth it?

Thanks

Thanks for the link.  The vin number is 194370S410990.  From what I can see all that can be determined from the vin is body style, location of build, that it has a V8, and that it is in fact a corvette.

Is there any way to tell what engine/trans/etc. that came with this car originally without a build sheet?  Is there any way to obtain a build sheet using the vin number?  What is the "tank sheet" and where on the tank is it located?  Is it on all cars?

Thanks

try this site mortec.com this will show you where to look to see if its the original engine and heads. usually the last portion of the vin is stamped on. the vin on the trans i believe is on the right side about half way back, but im not sure. do a search im sure youll find plenty of info on it.

Unfortunately there is no way to tell what engine came in the car without know the origonal engine serial number.
There are a total of 5 engine options
Standard ZQ3 350ci 300hp around 7000 for production
L46 350ci 350hp 4,910 produced
LT1 350ci 370hp 1,278 produced
LS5 454ci 390hp 4,473 produced
LS7 454ci 465hp unknow production numbers

As for the transmission there were 2 manual transmissions offered in 1970 the are Muncie M21 and the M22 and after looking at production numbers there were 4,383 car with M21 transmissions and only 25 with the M22 so your car most likely came with the M21 transmission
