I replaced all the vacuum hoses I could get to  in my 74. That means I didn't replace the two hoses to the headlight switch.
The lights open when I use the pull down switch but not when I pull out the headlight switch in the dash.
Is there a way to replace the headlight switch with out removing the dash.

Yeppers.  Pull out the plunger, reach up behind the dash and feel around for the little button on the switch housing.  When you press it, the plunger will release and come the whole way out.  From there, the front of the switch has a collar thingie that will unscrew and the switch will come out of the back of the dash panel.  Depending on the year, and the brand of the switch, there *might* be one screw, similar to the wiper switch.

Pretty common to lose a hose off of the switch, or to have severe leakage / blockage in the headlight switch.  :D

im not sure if its the same but when i removed my headlight switch from my 79 i had to do the button thing to get the knob & lever out i also revomed the left ac duct and vent to free up some space. actually i was able to replace the two hoses by just removing the ac duct and vent.

I tried to get my hand behind the dash today to get at the headlight switch.
There is no way I can get my hand up there.
I don''t have air so there is no duct I can remove for space.
What if I take off the dash pad?

Anymore suggestions would really help.

Don''t know if removing the dash pad will help, but be prepared to remove a lot of trim to get to it.  It''s a real PITA cuz you basically start at the rear and start removing trim.  [:@]

Hi SCHOON, anything behind that dash is tough to get to. I had to loosen up most of both sides and the center to change my speedometer and tach cable and I''m pretty sure I had to unbolt the steering column and let down about 2 inches to do that. The book says to remove the column so that you don''t ruin some bearing in there but I took a chance and the steering column is still OK. If I had a light switch I would have changed that since everything was apart but the switch worked than and still does, you might want to get some new bulbs and replace them while your at it. Overall it''s not a hard job it''s just that you have to take so much stuff apart to get in there. PG.

If memory serves me correctly, the bearing they are referring to is the slip joint for the collapsible column in the event of an accident.
