Yeah... ben hit and miss, even tried to send a PM to Dave... said it "timed out".  So far it seems to be related to the time of day.

Aldo,

Here''s a little bit of info.  The 300 & 350 both use Q-jets and hydraulic cams.  The LT-1 uses a solid lifter cam & a 750 cfm Holley w/ an aluminum intake.  While the 300 is a fairly mild cam, the 350 uses the 327/350 cam which was a pretty aggressive (for a flat tappet) cam.  I believe (not 100% sure) the 300 used the small valve heads while the 350 and LT-1 used the big valve (2.2" intake) heads also referred to as "double hump" because of the casting mark on the head.  The 350 and LT-1 used a steel crank and I think the 300 used a cast crank.  The LT-1 also used the transistor ignition.

Ok. If you take out a 20% loss of rated power because it is measured at the tire you stll get 1970 LS5 318/500. So if you do the math the on the 73 you should still have 318 horse. My argument is that the older engines were rated down for insurance reasons etc. The new ones were rated correctly and really were the dogs they were rated to be. Can anyone agree that a pre 1971 car is WAY more ballsy than a post 73 car? Heck, a 4 bolt main 350 with an Edelbrock package is advertised as having 435 to the flywheel. My build has nearly 400 to the tire. Hey Shark, not to nitpick but I think you and I both know that the heads you are talking about had 2.02 valves not 2.2 That would be one honkin'''' valve.

Ya got me there.  I meant 2.02".  You''re right, 2.2 would be a monster valve.

So what about my argument. Are smoggers from the factory really NOT slow. Or are the old Vettes really NOT fast? One more thing. Nice ride Aldo. You probably don''t see too many L82s in your area.

Well the decline started w/ the lowered CR for unleaded fuel, then we got the cat in ''75, and then ever increasing emission req''ts thru the ''80s.  With the coming of TPI on the scene, things gradually started to improve, hp wise.  Now today 400 hp is base engine w/ 600+ available next year.

BTW I don''t believe I was ever arguing w/ you.  At least that wasn''t my intention.

Yes , very few Corvettes here. and the 68-72 are very rare in the whole Italy. Still waiting for my 69 to arrive...
Actually when I''ve been in the washington DC area  and in NYC  last year, I have seen no Corvette at all...

I''m kind of confused here... being that I was one of the few satified with the info written by Michael Antonick in the 1953-1988 edition of the Corvette Black Book (pg 103...) about the way they changed the rating system for horsepower in the early 70s.  I have owned other Vettes before I "settled" for my current 1973 LS4 powered T-Top.  I had ''71 LS5 ''vert and an unfortunately not running basket case 70 LS6 that I sold to a rich guy.  Granted... the LS4 wasn''t a rocket off the line... it would still throw you back in the seat... but the top end was as fast as the LS5.  Oh, and BTW... it is virtually the same block, cast from the same molds... except my LS4 happens to be an original 4 bolt main casting.  I might be out of line here, and I am certainly not arguing with anybody... but my 454 was anything but a dog when it left the factory.  And besides, even if it was,  isn''t that what the aftermarket parts stores are for?  35 years later... I''ve changed the intake, carb, cam, ignition... tires...  I don''t have any problem keeping up with my crowd.  I guess I just dont see the arguement here.
Later,
Wedge

The beginning of the thread had implied that since the numbers were just changed there was really no effect on raw power, I thought that was incorrect. I agree that IS what aftermarket parts are for. Hell Yeah! Hey Aldo, last weekend at ST. Charles illinois there was an auction and there were literally thousands of Vettes. I saw no Ferrarris though. Every year in Effingham Illinois, there is a MidAmerica Motorworks Festival that just is out of this world. Too many Vettes too count. They take over the town. It is about 3 hours south of Chicago.
