confused with AC tools

I have bin looking to by a AC manifold gage set and have seen that some 134 sets are not for use in automotive use. Can somebody tell me what the difference would be so I don''t get the wrong one. I don''t need something expensive because it will be used for my own automobiles.

Also is there a difference in R-134 and R-134A

any suggestions and reviews on cheap sets would be very helpful.

Hi Ric, R-134A is the proper full identification for the refrigerant used in automotive. If your buying it at an auto supply then it''s the right stuff. If your looking for a manifold gage set for automotive it has to include or be ready for the quick-connect fittings on the newer cars. I don''t normally suggest the purchase of import merchandise of any kind but I used a manifold set from Harbor Freight tools that seemed to be OK quality. What year is the car in question?, are you converting from R-12 to 134A?

I have a 92 and it has already bin converted to R-134A.

I have had the car for 5 years and the air wouldn''t shut off and then the compressor would quit. I have added cans in the past to keep it going. I have found a jumper wire to ground that bypasses the controller so I have ordered a used controller and waiting for it to come.

I also have 6 leaks and one is the condenser the rest are hoses. My plan is getting the controller working while the compressor is working then going after the leaks after the freon quits working. I saw a manifold gage set made by Mastercool for $60.00 and it is USA made but it doesn''t come with the vacuum pump which I will need if I get the leaks out.

I have a Harbor Freight store about 15 miles from me and I think I will take a look there.
I also have the value of buying USA and it is getting tough to find things but I do try.

Thanks for clearing up my confusion on the freon numbers. That was my guess but I needed some advice.

Would you know if a aluminum or a brass manifold is better?? or it might nor matter because it will be on the shelf most of the time.[:D] I hope.
