Recently purchased a low mile 02'' and have an option for extended warranty 48mos or 48,000 miles additional to the 16.5 already on the clock.
Any pros and cons. The high tech stuff on the newer models is what interests or concerns me. Obviously the warranty comes at a significant cost!

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THESE OFFERS.THEY ARE FULL OF LOOPHOLES!! I HAVE CHECKED INTO THE FACTS WITH TWO DEALERSHIPS AND WAS TOLD IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT THE COMPANYS MUST CECIDE IF THE PART IS COVERED AFTER THE DEALERSHIP CALLS FOR THE OK TO REPAIR UNDER THE XTENDED WARRENTY>THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP TOLD ME HE HAD HAD "NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS"WITH THESES WARRENTYS.I INFACT HAD A 30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE AND TOOK THE WARRENTY WITH ME SO HE COULD LOOK IT OVER<IT ONLY TOOK A FEW MINUTES AND I WAS CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS A BAD IDEA>THESE COMPANY AND THERE REPS ARE LIKE CAR SALESMEN THEY WILL TELL YOU ANYTHING TO SELL YOU THE PRODUCT>HOPE THIS HELPS

Get a GMPP, GM or GMAC protection plan only (if you are getting one). There is non of the above nonsence. Like I said tho, if it is going to get driven it is worth it. Just for a check - mine was a 36/36 for 2200.00. I am going to drive the piss out of it. I also have a certified car so it has a 100k mile power train warranty already and a 3k/3 month full coverage warranty. If you got the cash it is piece of mind considering dealer hourly rates are astronomical.

First, realize that someone is making mone off this warranty, which means on average it is a money losing proposition. (A company insures 1000 vettes at 2200 each and knows that a few might require 10 grand in fixes but on average it will be, say $800, and it makes a fortune). That said, if you don''t have cash sitting around to fix it right if and when a major item goes wrong, buy the warranty for peace of mind. But only if you will really do the miles: these warranties do not cover things that deteriorate over time (hoses, seals, etc.).
Second, you will do better with a GM plan if you can get it. They have something of a reputation to keep and want to keep you as a future customer.
Third, keep meticulous records on the maintenance to prove you took care of the car by the book or better, should the warranty company contest a big fee (engine rebuild) claiming you can''t prove you changed the oil, etc., as required.

It all depends on what it costs. I bought an extended GMPP warranty when I bought my C5 (new) for about $2000. It did pay for itself after the differential gasket leak and column lock issues, but if those problems have already been taken care of with your car, the only other big item (if the dealership does the work) is the EBCM (Electronic body control module). I removed mine and sent it to ABSFIXER and for $150, it was repaired to be better than new. Dealerships typically charge $1100+ to do this. Don''t expect the water pump, alternator, or fuel pump to fail within 50,000 miles, so if the other high-dollar items have been fixed, the warranty may not be worth the money.

Guys, You have some good thoughts and experiences here! I appreciate your opinions very much. Even with the low miles (16.5K) the year model being 02'' takes the GMPP Warranty out of the question correct?, and it sounds like that would have been the option that most prefer.
I hear that many of the other warranty packages out there have too much wiggle room in the details, this from a couple of reputable garrages in my area!
