whipperdecon -> rear axle lube (9/16/2008 7:21:31 PM)

Hi  folks I have a problem that I can use some info on . The gear fluid in my 1977 Vette needs changing and I am having a problem getting it done. They tell me it is not possible to get at the plug on top of the case so to pump the old fluid out and they want to remove the back axles to get at it . I believe that I saw a memo stateing that the case could be drilled and threaded for a plug in the bottom . Can this be done without removing the differential ??

Welcome to the Corvette Forum.  Doesn''t yours have a plug w/ a red Positraction tag about half way up the housing on the psgr side?  I used an oil suction that looks like a grease gun w/o the lever and a hose on the end.  Just pull the handle out and it sucks the oil out.  Can also use to put new oil in.  Don''t forget to add a bottle of GM Posi additive.  It keeps the clutches from grabbing.

Absolutely.  Something like this:

Google for "suction gun" and you will find many versions and price ranges.  :)  These things are a huge time saver.  The hose on mine is just over 12", so you can get deep into the rear end to get all of the old stuff out.  Check the fluid when you remove it to check for metal pieces, clutch debris and shavings.

bill.
