I had a problem with the differential. The ring and pinion just wear out, it cost $900 to fix. But the grinding noise was to much for me. I also replaced everything from the u-joints to the brakes, so I won't have to worry about it. My 74 runs nice and sweet like it's suppose too.

the "play" will be more of a wobble, like your tire isnt completely round or something..........no sweat about the questions though, thats what the forum is for!!!

hope this helps

Sounds like the same problem I just fixed on my 74.
I thought it was the rear bearings etc.
Turns out it was the parking brake pads. The pads were original and the springs fell apart into the calipers making a nasty squealing grinding noise.
Bought new stainless steel parking brake kit from Ecklers.
Cost = $200
Worth it, they will last as long as the Vet
