I have an 87 conv with 102,xxx miles. The existing stock engine runs very well, but I know I will need to make some decisions sooner or later. Could I rebuild the 350 and get 325 HP, or should I buy a short block crate motor. The reason I say short block is I can keep the original TPI on top of the higher HP crate motor. Calif smog laws are a little overkill to say the least.
What would be a more satisfying way to go about this project. I plan on keeping this car for several years.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks

Doc

Is the engine using oil? Smoking? Leaking?
I've got an old chevy truck with a 350 that used to be my grandfather's (he died in '96) with over 300,000 miles on it. Yeah, it leaks a little (sometime a LOT), but it still starts every time I need it. If you're planning on replacing the motor with a similar HP engine, why not just run the engine that's in it 'til it dies? I've been saying for years that I'll replace my 350 when it goes ..... but it just won't die. I'd be willing to bet that that your motor will outlast most of the rest of the car.
Now, if you're planning on a major upgrade, I'd just go with the shortblock and swap the intake over. If you're a tinkerer (like me), put the old motor on a stand and pull it apart. I like to see how well it has held up through the years. If it's in good shape, do a partial rebuild an keep it as a spare. People are always looking for 350's.
