louder pipes

My '65 coupe has the stock rear exhaust. I would've prefered stock side pipes, but I ended up buying this coupe for various reasons. Anyway, is there a solution that looks like stock exhaust but will give me a better sound? A sound closer to side pipes? I don't wnat to make the mods for side pipes if I don't have to.

I have heard that chambered exhaust sounds louder than stock, but does it sound "good". Yes, there is probaly an "ear of the listener" preference factor as well, but in general I would like a better sounding exhaust that looks like stock. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

RE: louder pipes

Hi scotttechy, I like noise too, I put 2& 1/2 in chambered exhaust on my 74 T-Top, I have the base engine and auto, I like it a lot, I think it would be more fun in a stick shift but for a nice sound at a fair price go for it. It was an easy install, I used the stock cast exhaust, If you have headers you will have to do some mods to make it fit. I did not use a "H" or crossover pipe but I've heard that helps to mellow out the sound, whatever that means?
My car sounds faster than it is!PG

RE: louder pipes

The midyear factory side exhausts sound good but on a big block, they are a little loud for long trips unless you use earplugs. The only mod req'd after removal of the stock undercar exhaust is the install of a rear filler panel without the holes for the exhaust tips & removal of the stock rocker panels. Install is easy after that. I suspect the undercar chambered pipes are a little quieter in the car because they are longer and the exit is farther from your ears.
