1978 L-48 water outlet need help
 
Hi i got a 78' and am starting to dress it up. i would like to know if any of you know if a new crome water outlet for a stock 350 l-48 needs the emmission port and if it needs to be torqued.

Hi jrs 2.0, the vacuum switch on the water outlet acts as a limit for the signal to the EGR valve, when the engine is cold it keeps the EGR valve from opening and killing the engine, as the water temp rises the switch will open and allow the EGR to operate under high vacuum conditions.If you want your emissions equiptment to work properly then you'll need to keep the vacuum switch in the water outlet. I don't use a torqwrench on the bolts, just tighten them evenly, they'll only take about 25-35 ft. lb's anyway.

theres no point in having an emmision port here if it's capped right?

Your right, no need for extra garbage since it's not in use now. Go ahead and use the chrome job.

all i do is take off the hose, current water outlet and install the new one right? Is there any way recommended to do it

With the engine cold, drain enough coolant from the radiator to lower the water level below the thermostat housing, normaly this is about 1-1.5 gallons. Remove the upper hose from the t-stat neck and lift the hose up so any water will drain into the radiator, now carefully loosen the two bolts holding the housing-these may be seized because the steel bolts will react with the aluminum manifold. Clean the manifold of old gasket and inspect the sealing surface for errosion, if it's rough and pitted the O-ring on the new outlet won't seal, if it's smooth wipe it off with paper towel and carb or brake cleaner. Don't use any type of sealing compound on the O-ring, this is also the time to replace the thermostat if your having any overheating problems. The new stat housing just bolts back on but don't go crazy on tightening the bolts, you can easily warp the housing and the O-ring will never seal. Fill the cooling system back up and keep an eye on it for leaks, I have not had very good luck with this type of outlet, they tend to leak.
