Finishing up the rebuild of the top end of my 73 and i have 2 questions.

1) How hard is it to drop the fuel tank on one of these things?? It has been sitting a long while and you can smell the bad gas so i need to clean it out!!

2) Is it possible that this 350 cid car has a TH400 in it??? I noticed a red wire running down the firewall and into the side of the tranny! And the pan looks different than a my TH350 in my chevelle but i can honestly say i have never taken a good look at a TH400!!

I helped a friend of mine replace his tank on a 75. Good idea to do it in an area that is vented very well such as outside.
Be prepared to replace the straps, anti squeak material , sending unit and any rubber lines.
If it were me I would let a shop do the job.
Also, not a bad idea to replace the tank, it is 33 years old.
As for the trans, you never know what has been changed over the years.
My Vet is a 74 and has a 78 motor in it.

When you get the tank out, and drain it, look for any debris. If there is a lot, ya, you might want to change the tank. Otherwise, you could be putting crap into the fuel lines and clogging the filter.

Dropping the tank is not a big deal as noted before drain it before you begin, and make sure you have new anti rattle stirips ready as they will be shot,and replace hoses while you are there. When I did mine the sending unit worked fine so I didn't touch it, and I checked the straps which looked good and so I did not replace. That was 3 years ago no problems. My philosophy is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

As far as your transmission is concerned if it is original then it is a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400. They were the only automatic option offered in 1968 thru 1975. The 350 became an option in 1976 on the L48 engine only. After 1977 only turbo 350's were offered.
