C3 Rear wheel bearing replacement

I have some slack in the rear wheel bearings of my 74. I would like to replace them this fall/winter. Is this a hard job? Do I need special tools? Also, I was told you have to shim them properly. ???? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hey 74, you say you have slack in the bearings, is this at the wheel bearing itself or are you getting play in other areas? I would not tackle the wheel bearings myself, it's gonna' cost you $300-$400 per side but there's alot of work involved. Where are you located? Ship them to Van Steel in Florida or Calidonia Classics in Michigan.

I am located in West Virginia, and yes it is slack in the bearings/spindle. Thanks for the info.

Hi 74 vett and welcome to the forum, yes it's a mega big job to change those bearings. I took the trailing arms off and brought them to Corvette Etc in Charlotte. That by itself cost plenty, and since there is so much to take apart you might as well get: new TA front bushings, new parking brake parts and pads, new strut rod bushings, new calipers and pads, new shocks, new spring bushings and 4 half shaft "U" joints. Get a Haynes Manual and come back with any other questions. PG

Consider also assemblies with serviceable / greaseable bearings.

I've never heard of feedback on these... Anybody???
