cleaning up the engine compartment
Hey guys, I'm trying to decide on how I should clean up my engine and the compartment of my 75 vette. I would like to buy a new engine which would solve some of this problem, but do you have any recommendations on repainting the engine or the compartment. If any of you have restored the inside of your vette I would appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks, Jonathon Holmes.

RE: cleaning up the engine compartment
If you buy a new engine then have the engine compartment blasted with baking soda after you pull the old one out. Por-15 makes paint that will work well on fiberglass etc.
You can put it on with a brush and it looks like it was sprayed when dry. It takes some work to get the compartment done right but it's worth it in the end. |

I used Plasticoat ultra flat spray paint on mine. About as simple as it gets and looks pretty goodAttachment 2033Attachment 2034

Instead of using the old degreaser that dulls everything, I use "engine brite" as it degreases everything real well and leaves everything with a good shineon it. I haven't found any degreasers that compare as far as doing both degrease and shine.

If I buy a 350 crate engine or a 383 stroker, will I have a problem fitting the new engine in the compartment and with the old transmission?

RE: cleaning up the engine compartment
there should be no problems at all these cars cam with 350 so a 350 (or 383) crate motor should have no problem fitting in

RE: cleaning up the engine compartment
Pretty neat suggestions on this thread. The pictures that Rich G. posted look excellent.

yea, thanks for all the suggestions.

RE: cleaning up the engine compartment
I used steel wool and hot water and soap and some 400 grit sand paper, then used a wire wheel and those black porous cleaning wheels on the frame areas then used black primer and semi gloss paint on them

Those are some really nice pics. Did you do all of that yourself? How hard is it to pull the engine?

RE: cleaning up the engine compartment
Not hard. Get an engine hoist and a leveler and you too can pull your engine.

Thanx! it wasnt real bad but i have pulled motors many times before from camaros chevelles novas etc.. but this was my first vette, It had a descent 454 with worn out old L88 heads on it and the valves were goin so i pulled it, I found out the car was an original 350 hp 327 and happen to have a 350 hp 327 that was new so i dropped it back in after the cleaning (which was the hard part).
it is a good time to replace all worn stuff like motor mounts, clutch and pressure plate, battery cables, dry rotted vaccum lines,etc.... |

RE: cleaning up the engine compartment
just a heads up i dont think por15 is to be used on plastic or firewall (fiberglass) but i may be wrong but is great for things like anti rust for frame,a-arms etc..
