Drop base air filter
 

I have seen some discussions on here about "drop base air filters". Does anyone have a good link to one or know where to get one? I have a small block 350, holly 600 and would really like to get a little more room under the hood.

The drop base air filters are tricky to match up with certian carbs.

Holley carbs can be a little finnicky about things in the vicinity of and too close to, the top of the carb. If,after installing this beautiful new air cleaner, the car runs differently,especially at higher rpm's,try removing the air cleaner or putting on a taller element to get the top away from the carb.

I got mine through Paragon. Watch out for clearance issues with the distributor. It was close on my '73 454. I also used a K&N Flowcharger lid on mine. Works fantastic.

From this discussion on the "drop base" air cleaners, I'm now wondering if the element itself being close or far away from the carb makes any difference in the air flow. ie; does the air need room after flowing through the element to regroup (so to say) in order to flow evenly into the carb? W/ a "drop base," it seems that the air would be going in the sides through the element and then have to flow over the top edges and into the carb. Does this make a difference, as opposed to flowing in through the element and then "down" into the carb? (I remember the great improvement in motorcycle carbs when they went from side-draft to down-draft. My 1123 Honda had the side draft system and I had 33mm smooth-bores, the biggest thing going at the time.) It just seems to me, just by visualizing the situation, that by dropping the base, you bring the lid of the cleaner closer to the top of the carb, there-by reducing the amount of room inside the the air filter (canister). Would this allow less flow? Does the amount of room inside the air cleaner (canister) make a difference?
