Flywheel, external or intenral balance
To my understanding, my fresh 454 will require and external balance flywheel. Is this true for all BBs?
Also, I know that some SB parts will fit a BB. Bell housing for one, and the starters too. Any others? Dist., flywheel, clutch assembly, water pump, etc, etc.? |
RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
dist is the same i think a sb 400 has same flyweel but check on that

RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
The externally balanced flywheel used on the 454 is 168 teeth. The SB 400 flywheel is externally balanced but it is 153 teeth. The starter for the 168 tooth application will fit. If you order a starter for a 69 Corvette small block or big block, it will work. All 69's had the 168 tooth flywheel. Nothing else is interchangable between the SB and BB. The block will bolt up to the bellhousing. Ensure that you have a bellhousing that accomodates the 168 tooth flywheel. The flywheel will not fit into the other one. I don't have the casting numbers handy. Hope this helps a little.

RE: Flywheel, external or internal balance
O. K.
The 454 takes an external balance flywheel, 168 tooth. Now, if the '69 came with this setup on all, how about the bell housing? It should interchange too, right? How would I look up the correct casting number? Point me in the right direction, and I'll look it up. Thanks |
RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
The GM part numbers for the bell housing you need are 3958403 or 3899621. The bolt pattern for the block and trans are the same for big and small block engines.

RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
It is my understanding that all 427 engines were internally balanced and 454's are externally balanced. I have a 454 block in my 69 Vette, but it is internally balanced. I think at sometime before I became the owner the 427 parts were installed in the 454 block. I have been told the 454 is a stronger built block than the 427.

RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
I have been told that the only dif between the 454 and 427 is the bore and stroke.

Here is the scoup:
All original big block engines are internally balanced except the 454's and 502's. Source: HPBooks "Big-Block Chevy Performance" and "How to Rebuild Big-Block Chevy Engines". |

Thanks for the info , Tom, I'll look into finding those books.

RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
Nope, no check yet!:D
I'm holdin'off 'til I get the headers and bell housing. (the frickin' weather too[&o]) |
RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
What bellhousing you going to?I take it, it is a steel scattershield type? I am going to run the old girl with the turbo 400 with a stage 2 shift kit an a B&M pro ratchet shifter and see how it does.I have been leaning towards converting to an M22 but I want to see how the auto works with the 350 first. If I don't get what I want with the auto then when I put in the big block 454 I will spend the extra money and go to the M22.

RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
I'm goin' with a stock aluminum bell, I'm buildin' a road cruiser, not a drag star.
Besides, I'll only be runnin' a little over 400 hp., backed by a 3 sp stick w/OD. I'm goin' for a "look" and "flat out" performance, a long range bomber, if you will! A 1/4 mile just isn't long enough, I wanna run for miles, and miles, and miles, and miles, and.........:D |
RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
Hey Dave when I was looking for Cranks I found some that were internaly balanced for the 454. which would be better?
|
RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
The best I can do for ya, is a forged steel crank, not cast.
As far as the balance.............I really don't know which would be best. I'm still learnin' big blocks. From what I hear, most people are goin' with the external balance. My 454 is out of a 1 1/2 ton truck, and came externally balanced. Concidering the torque involved, I'm guessin' that the external is the way to go, after all, GM ain't wrong very often. (with their engines anyway:D) |
RE: Flywheel, external or intenral balance
I went with external on minetoo. I was just wondering for future up grades. thanks
