L-82 rough idle

This L-82 problem is similar to recent post....rough idle, lots of throttle needed when parking in garage to keep it running. I have turned up the idle screw, which helps, but the engine 'hunts' several hundred rpm's up and down .

Ideas ?

RE: L-82 rough idle

Hi again Bill, if you read the last post on the other thread about running too lean you can apply some of that info, it sounds like your's is also a lean fuel problem. If the carbuerator hasn't had attention for a few years I would suggest a rebuild kit along with a new float, you probably don't have the same emmision controls on the '74 as the latter '70's but the symptoms sound like a fuel issue.

is there a lean / rich adjust on the carb that I can try before doing a rebuild ?

RE: L-82 rough idle

If you still have the stock carb on the engine it's a Rochester Quadrajet, Idle mixture screws are in the throttle plate body, very low on the front of the carb, if it hasn't been tinkered with it may still have the plastic limiting caps on the screws which you can remove by cutting with diagonals cutters, it would be easier to get to them with the carb off the manifold, typical adjustment for these are about 2 to 2-1/2 turns out from a LIGHTLY seated position. There is also a power piston that positions the primary metering rods within the primary jets, this piston is controlled by manifold vacuum and if it is stuck in the 'down' position due to carbon build-up or gum from old gas then you will be running lean most of the time, a carb tear-down and rebuild will take care of it.
