Parking break
 

hey how is everyone doing?
so its that time of year again...time to get the inspection. I went the other day and failed. I failed for the parking break. In new york state the requirement is the parking break has to hold the vehicle stationary with the engine running at a slight accelerated speed with shift lever in low gear while engaging the clutch.
So my question is does anyone know if they can let clutch all the way out and the parking break hold the car still???

Hi 74corvetteowner, I've been fine, thanks for asking. Here in N.C. if your car is 74 or older they don't require any more yearly inspections. I guess they figure that if it's that old and still runs, it's OK.
Do you know how to adjust the E brake? PG.

I don't believe the Corvette (at least the Shark version) could possibly hold the car w/ the tranny in low and the clutch engaged. I've tried to see if it would stop the car from 10 mph in neutral and while it does, it takes a could piece of real estate to do it. And that's w/ a fully functional, adjusted one.

PG- Yes i know how to adjust the break i was just wondering if it was possible to do so that it would hold the car back as new york state requires.

It can be done. You will have to adjust the hell out of them and it doesn't hurt to back up a touch with the brake lever pulled to seat the pads. My parking brake holds better if backing up for some reason.

Is the requirement that; the brake should hold at a slight accelerated speed (what rpm would that be?) while 1.) engauging the clutch or 2.) while the clutch is fully engauged? There's a big difference. I would think that it isn't while the clutch is fully engauged. Does this inspection station have guys there who know what the heck they're doing? #2 seems (above) seems unreasonable, as an emergency brake is to hold the vehicle stationary while turned off or in neutral or park (on an automatic). I don't understand the slipping of the clutch while the brake is engauged, and surely not fully engauging the clutch w/ the E-brake on. Only my opinion, and I'm not questioning you what-so-ever. It just seems crazy to me.

I agree. It does sound a little wacko to me too. The reason it's called a parking brake and not an emergency brake is that it is only meant to hold the car when it is parked. Not sure what the inspection station is attempting.

If everything else fails there's a device out there called "Linelock". It's like a solenoid valve that you plumb into the brake system(usually front) to hold the car in the lights while revving it up at the drag strip. It's activated by a litttle inconspicuous switch on the shift lever. Plumbed into the rears it would almost certainly hold the car when you let out the clutch. The park brake on my '79 won't hold the car with the auto in low and the engine revved much,maybe 1000 rpm and it contains almost all new components adjusted too tight for normal use.(special adjustment for inspection) Maybe you could pull acouple of plug wires to make it easier to kill? ;)
