Speed ohmeter cable

Speed ohmeter cable crapped out on me last night.

What's involved to replace on a 74.

Thanks,

Don't know the answer outright but imagine it will be a PITA. I'll see if my BIL still has his '74 assembly manual. if so I'll post the relivant pages. Cheers

Check the gear in the tranny first!!! It's just plastic and is usually the cause. My 73's odometers stopped rolling but the speedometer still works (thank goodness). Pulling the speedometer is one thing I've been postponing since it's supposed to be a real PITA. If you have really itty-bitty hands it may be a little easier. Be sure to check the gear in the transmission first though since that's the likely reason for it to stop working and it's soooo much easier to repair than the gauge.

If it is the cable, it has to be removed from the housing on the speedo end. It's not easy but can be done w/o removing the dash or cluster. But I do have small hands and after doing this, they look like I'd wrestled a bobcat.

I have just replaced my Speedo tranny cable, gear and the "housing" to the gear in my 74 and it was a real PITA. To get at the back of the speedo i dropped the steering column and unscrewed the dash but left it in place so that i could get my hands in.

One thing to look at when you pull the tranny gear out for the speedo checking the "Housing" the gear sits in and the cable screws into because mine was really out of round causing the gear to get hung up

How did the repair go? Any tips? I have to replace my odometer on my 73.

Real busy last couple of weeks, no time to mess with the Vet.
Maybe next week, stay tuned.

Question for you how did you get to the speedo gear on the trans.
I can't even get my hands on it.
Doid you drop the exhaust on that side?

I finally changed out my speedo cable and drive gear in my 74
If you would like to know how it's done and save yourself some headaches.
Please ask.
