taking the dash apart

I'm trying to get behind my driver's side dash to replace bulbs and such but don't know what all will have to be unplugged. I took all the screws out that the Haynes manual suggested but still no luck. Thanks.

RE: taking the dash apart

Hi jsholm2, the safe way to get the drivers dash out is to loosen the steering column at the rag joint, but I just removed the 2 bolts that holdthe steering columnto the dash and lowered it enough so that I could pull the dash out far enough to reach back there to get to the bulbs.

Granted I'm "bitching" about reality, but having to take the dash apart to replace bulbs, alittle extreme. And "Haynes" should have stuck to "underwear." I have a bulb out somewhere in the dash also and now I'm thinking about a "night vision device." LOL

Texas Jim,
I was able to take out the part of the dash with the speedometer and tac without removing the steering wheel. I have a 79 and tilted the steering wheel down all the way and with a little pushing and pulling I was able to squeeze it out. Forgot to put the speedometer cable back in, need to go back and do it again.

It is real hard to disconnect the wires from the back of the gauges, but you can twist it around and take it off then pull it out.
