RE: Trim Tag 1974

Hi JR and welcome to the forum.
E 12 is the date that your Vette was manufactured.
I don't remember exactly but I think that GM started to make the 74's in Sept of 1973.
Sept = A
Oct = B
Nov= C
Dec = D
Jan = E

If that is correct than your car was Born on Jan 12, 1974.

Hope that helps.
Tell us more about your Vette-and some pic would be nice.
PG.

pg: Mine's I09 which is April 9, 1973. Did they leave out a letter between Jan & Apr? I remember that yours was J01 for May 1.

Hi 73shark, I cant find the link to the Corvette Registry, if but yours is I09 and mine is J01 so they must have skipped a letter in some month. Maybe someone will find that link for us again.
Or am I wrong about starting in September, could they have started in August? PG.

Hi... maybe this will help.

The 1975 Body build codes started over again in August 1974 with the letter A through L (July 75).
These are body codes only, engine codes are a different animal.

I dont know if this is the site you guys are talking about, but here if you put in the last 5 digits of your vin number it will tell you when your car's birthday is.

Thanks for finding the link and figuring out the production starting date.

I just got an original 1974 Corvette brochure from www.automemories.com I see a few others own a 74 so I figured I'd post the link. PG.

I'm going to have to disagree with thepost above as I have a 74 corvette that doesn't coincide with the information shown.

There was a strike in 74 that messed up production and the 74s were produced until the middle of October as a result. Not July as stated by the author of that book.

My 74's trim tag has a code of N30 which translatesinto a September 30th production date. My car is a Canadian car and GM of Canada kept records that allow verification of the production date. My documentation from GM states that my car was produced on October 1, 1974 and thatthe car was shipped to Canada on October 2, 1974. This is on printed paper with GM letter head on the top so it's right from the horse's mouth. :D

Also worth mentioning is the fact that the birthday site posted above also estimates October 2nd as the car's birthday based on the last 5 digits of the VIN.
