What is the best way to remove old dye?

My door panels were previously sprayed with interior dye, now I have some chips and I'd like to remove that

old dye so that I can start again on a clean surface, does anyone no what to use to get the old dye off?

If the dye isn't put on in some kind of thick coat or something. Why wouldn't you just scuff them up, prep them and then re-dye them the color you want?

I am changing from Red interior to Black. I am covering the factory color with interior primer and a black dye and it seems to have come out looking like a factory job.

Anyone know of drawbacks that may occur down the road, from a home dye job? I'm a mechanic head and interior is a "learn as I go" kind of thing right now.

There is a nice primer from Krylon specifically for vinyl and plastic... works wonders. I scuff the original, primer, scuff and then dye. haven't had any problems with it yet. Some solvents will damage the plastic and vinyl, making it almost impossible to paint afterwards (acetone, Oops, ketone, etc.).

bill.

Acetone will defenately melt ABS. I don't know exactly what the compound is for the panels, but you could try it on the back side and see if it affects it. I found that most solvents are damageing to these types of materials. perhaps you could use a media blaster. Maxi-blast makes a plastic media that will not damage the underlying material as it is relativley the same hardness. Good luck with your project.

When you say scuff and prime and scuff and paint, but scuff with what?
