April 9, 1973 which is about right as I picked it up April 17, 1973. Checked the build order that I found in the car and it said 4-10-73.

Thanks so much, pg! August 21, 1980 is the date I came up with. (I'm still waiting for the info from the "Bowling Green, Ky. Plant.") I was in my 35th. day of being stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, as I had left Baumholder, Germany on May 26th., taken leave at home in New York then headed to Texas. Thanks not just for the info on my car, but also for reminding me of the great memoriesabout the care-free daysin my mid-twenties.

I do have a question about the "9th. character" in the VIN, the one that has a question mark in it's place on the "birthday site." In my GM Corvette manual, in the breakdown of the VIN, it explains the "9th. character" only as; "check number." Does anyone know what that number is all about?
Thanks again.

RE: Your Vettes Birthday.

The "check number" is a number used to varify that the vin number is correct and has not be changed The check digit for a VIN is obtained through a number of mathematical steps. Each letter used in a VIN has a corresponding number value, while numbers stay the same. Therefore, the VIN becomes a string of 17 numbers (with a space in the ninth position, where the check digit goes). Each position in the VIN has a weight -- the number of times that digit is multiplied.

No problem Texas. If you take some time and search around online you should be able to find a webpage with the numbers to check to see what your correct "check digit" is

RE: Your Vettes Birthday.

I received the info from the "bowling Green, Ky. website this morning. They told me that my car was the 4391st. 'Vette produced there. My last four in my VIN is 4391. The "job sequence number" is 03-4391. After all the anticipation on mypart thinking that I'd get all this great info from them, this is all I got. As far as"exactly" whenmy 'Vette was built (shift #) and the date of the last 'VetteMFGd for '81, they said that their archive didn't go back that far. I wonder what they can tell you besides what you can figure out on your own according to your VIN. Seems like a waste of time in writingto them. In the amount of time the plant was open, up to the time my car was built, looks like they did about 18 cars per shift. (if it's a three shift (8 hrs. p/shift) plant). 2.25 cars p/hour. I read somewhere that they average about 15 'Vettes p/ shift also. It was a corvette museum site. I need to look for that one again.

Hi 70 canam BB, glad you you could trace Vettes your birthday, take a week off and have a party! I was borna Hungarian Gypsy so it was easier to trace the history of my car than my history. I lived in so many states that when I was up north they said you must be from the south, and when we moved to the south thay said you have a Yankee accent?
Well I'm in a little town in the middle of noware now! I don't care what thay say about NC, they still have the best shine, you'all stop by some day if your ever passin' thru. PG.

RE: Your Vettes Birthday.

I E-mailed the guy who sold me the car and told him what happened. I said the car had been searching for me for the last 25 years. He owned it from 1981 so it had not been abused and all the little parts you need for a resto were still there. He graduated to a 96.I tried to get him to buy a 97 for the LS1 but he went ahead anyway.
