1984 headlight issues

Both headlights went up and down without fail until a few weeks ago one wouldn’t come up, 10 miles down the road it will pop up. And then not go down. Next morning headlight is down. Now the other one is doing same thing. Up and down when they feel like it. I dont hear motor running, telling me its the gears. Any advice. And ive looked for the plastic housing motors and cannot find. Please help.
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

I believe you can get metal gears for them from the aftermarket.

Thanks for the response. Trying to find a set of refurbished motors are not panning out. Im gonna take a shot at rebuilding them myself using a gear rebuild kit.

I followed this YouTube video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sPj1kJm4AnU

Took me a few hours. 2nd one went easier. I had one screw that didn't want to come out of the 1st one. I had to run to auto zone to get a torx screwdriver for the difficult one that I you can't get to with a torx socket. Bought the metal gears from Ecklers. Not a difficult job. Go for it.

I have a 96 where the Right headlight, when activated winked a few times, then went to proper position, but when deactivated, it only closed half way. No stress, strain, or noise detected. I went in and replaced the plastic gear with a brass one. Now, the right headlight will only open partially. Again, no stress, strain, or noise detected. Now for the intriguing part: if you open the hood 50% or so, or more, the headlights open and close as designed. Less than 50%, and it only opens partially. If the headlights are fully open and you close the hood, they function as designed upon being deactivated. Now while I’m no mechanic, my neighbor (an unofficial Corvette-ologist) and I both have meticulously looked for any source of hindrance and can find nothing close. I have removed the light and replaced it and the same issue is present. The left headlight is fine and functions as designed. It appears as though gravity is somehow affecting a component.

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect either the motor or the gears. Both of which I think the aftermarket has fixes for

Thanks for the time and reply. I’ve already changed the gear in the malfunctioning light and will replace the motor too if necessary. It’s just odd that before swapping the gear it would open correctly after a wink or 2, but only partially close. After replacing the gear it closes correctly one open, but only opens half way - unless the hood is open. Then, both lights open and close as designed. There is no sluggishness, nor is there any unusual sound or action.

That sounds more like an electrical problem.
