1986 Corvette
 

i just bought an '86 corvette coupe..the radiator fan does not turn on and the temperature reaches 210f..it is not the sensor because that is new...maybe it is a fuse..but my question is WHERE IS THE FUSE BOX AT?!?! (IM A NEWBIE...THIS IS MY FIRST VETTE...HOPEFULLY NOT MY LAST)...ANYTHING WILL BE HELPFULL!!....THANKS!

i thought that it was around the LF wheel, but i could easily be wrong. i havent worked on one in a while....

My 86 coupe has a fuse panel on the right side of the dash. Open the passenger door and look at the side of the dash cover for a plastic removeable cover.

isnt there also a fuse box around the LF wheel...a friend of mine had a ZR-1, and i know there was a control panel of some sort up there.

Check the relay, its by the master cyl.

also i think its 3 things, fan,sensor in motor for temp or relay that tells the fan to come on.
do urself a huge favor go buy a vette manuel for 16 bucks.

Just last month, I had an AC problem. The air was not cold and not warm. Come to find out the radiator fan was running at 1/2 or less.
Replaced the fan motor and my AC is AOK and the Temp of the coolent is back where it should be.
Disconect the fan motor and put a meter on it. See if you have 12V if you do the fan Motor is bad.
If you don't keep looking the other way.

One note........You got to get it hot first:D

Hi Pal, Better late than never. Maybe it'll help someone else. My '89 Vette came from the factory with a fan switch that does not accuate the fan til the temperature reaches 232 degrees farinhiet. I didn't believe it when told by a Chevrolet Service Mgr. Regards, Mike

Mike you took the words right out of my fingertips. Mike is correct, The fan won't come on untill way up there in temp. I chose to put in a lower temp stat (180 deg)and a lower temp fan switch (I think it's a 200 deg.) as well. I wasn't comfortable with the temp way up there. In my case on my 88 I needed to have Aux. fans, which are the ones infront of the radiator( I think these are for the A/C) which my 88 had. The switch turns on the aux fans, the main fan between the engine and the radiator is contoled by the ecm.

Hey crvttbass, Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know about the 232 Degree Switch when I bought my '89 back in '95. I brought the car to a Chevy dealer and told the service Mgr. my car was overheating. When I came back to pick-up the car, he told me that everything was working fine and the fan was kicking-in at 232 degrees just like it's supposed to. I said WHAT? Why didn't you tell me before I left the car? Anyway, it cost $ 100. for diagnosis and education that I hope to find here on Corvette Forum. I will share my limited Corvette knowlege with all.
