1989 L98 Air Box and Filter

I just bought a 1989 L98 Coupe with 47K miles that is bone stock. I have seen somewhere that cutting the top out of the airbox and installing a K & N filter is a good first step to improving performance. How much of the box lid should I remove? Would drilling 1" holes and putting in several pre-filters be almost as effective? Are their any other simple performance mods I can do to complement the airbox mod? This is my first Vette, but I do my own wrenching on motorcycles and my Jeep! Thanks

When i cut my air lid, i basically only left enough to hold the filter in. Another good mod is to bypass the coolant hoses going into the throttle body.

Thanks I'll cut a large opening. Any details on best way to bypass the coolant hoses.

How about removal of the Cats or other smog stuff, my state has no inspections? Just your thoughts of course I would never actually do such a thing! ;)

You can go to a local auto parts store and get a couple feet of 5/8" heater hose and run it from the outlet on the water pump to the HVAC. I'll see if i can get a pic of it up.

As far as deleting cats, you can definately delete the pre-cats and you would be fine even if you had emissions. You can buy a pre-cat delete pipe, or just be cool and get some long tube headers. Replace the main cat with a nice free-flowing cat, and unleash some power while still being clean.

Thanks Raisinbran, pics would be great. I found a pre-cat delete pipe with new single Cat from Dynomax in Ecklers for $250. Would this be a good choice? I have a lot to learn! My manual came in yesterday. (Light bedside reading)! Thanks again!
