85 700r4 shifting issues

Hi Everyone. I searched through the forms and could not find answers, my apologies if this has been answered before.
I have an 85 vette that where the OD is not working properly, shifts into OD around 30MPH and lugs like crazy before it will down shift. I have just not used OD in the city as my temporary solution, manually shifting in and out of OD as needed.
Under normal driving, 1 though 3 shifts normally, but under heavy throttle, will shifts hard and seems to slip.
Trans fluid is OK ( not burnt but needs to be changed) and the detent cable has a kink in it.
I have a new cable on order and I am hoping that will help. I am also thinking I should change the oil and filter while I am changing the cable. As well, I am thinking about installing a shift kit ( only want to get in there once if possible) and hoping it may fix my problem.
I am wondering if anyone has done this already, would appreciate any advice or learn from someone else's experience.

thanks
Bryan

Welcome to the forum.

If the 700R4 is controlled electronically, you could get the computer scanned for codes.
