85 rear wheel bearings

I have my Vette on jack stands and can't get rear wheel bearings loose. I took of the wheel, calipers and picked up a t-55 torx. I can't seem to get the bolts loose, it's real awkward to get at. I put penetrating oil on for the last 2 weeks, bought a long handle 1/2" ratchet and still can't get it loose. Do I dare try an air impact wrench on it? HELP!!!!

RE: 85 rear wheel bearings

This is a common malady for the wheel bearings. Having given them a few applications of penetrating fluid and they are still stuck, give them another squirt, take the socket and put it on the bolt and give it a couple of good smacks with a hammer. The vibrations may suck more of the fluid deeper into the threads but I doubt it. If the breaker bar doesn't do the trick then you have no other choice but to go to the impact. Just make sure that the socket is fully seated because if you round Torx out, you're SOL. The impact usually does the trick for me. The other option is to take it to the dealer and let it be his problem ;)

i would maybe try a cheater bar before risking with the impact. (put a big metal pipe on the end of the breaker bar)

RE: 85 rear wheel bearings

I finally got them out, hit them and used a 1000 pound torque impact wrench. I had to disassemble the entire rear suspension.(not that hard) I put Prothane bushings in while I was at it. Anyone with a Vette 10 years old or older should do this. Mine were distorted and no longer in the center of the hole. (not that hard to do but you need a wheel puller to remove the old bushings and a 36mm socket for the ouside hubs) I can't wait to get it back on the road. In answer to the PB Blaster versus Liquid Wrench debate, 2 months of PB/2 days of Liquid Wrench. So if you don't have all year-buy the Wrench! thank you for the help!
