Brake Replacement Question

I'm afraid it's time to replace the brakes on my '90 Coupe. That being the case, I don't really have
a mind set on whether to get the standard pads like Duralast etc., or go to the newer Ceramic type.

My mechanic says the Ceramic type are not supposed to squeek or accumulate brake dust but
that he is not convinced that is the case.

Whaddya think?

RE: Brake Replacement Question

I am extremely happy with the performance of ceramic pads and felt they were worth the extra money, of course I was told after I put them on and was bragging about the stopping power and the quietness, that they are prone to wearing the rotors faster. so I guess you take the bad with the good.

RE: Brake Replacement Question

I have never tried ceramics, but a good friend of mine who helps me work on my '90 and is an excellent mechanic told me to stay away for ceramics because they just don't have the stopping power that a metallic pad has. I bought the performace friction carbon metallics from autozone for $46 for the fronts and they work much better than the PBR pads it had on it. I am not sure if those were semi-metallics or not, but the brakes were horrible. Dust isn't a problem if you wash you car :every couple of weeks and use simple green. :-)

What is simple green? Wax?

I had my '87 rim recesses painted to match the body, and the dust was horrible. It was extremely tough to wash off, even with a toothbrush...

Simple Green is a cleaner that works well on rins and will not damage them. It is also non-toxic supposedly.

I first started using Simple Green back in 1988. It cleans everything and does not harm the environment. Works great on carpet stains and such. Time to try it on my rims.

RE: Brake Replacement Question

I have heard there are some aerosol products avail. in part stores that blow off brake
dust but the only ones I have seen are the kind you have to take the wheel completely off to use.

A buddy said he thought there were some that you could spray through your wheels but I don't know.

Anybody heard ????

RE: Brake Replacement Question

Be careful with some of those cleaners. If you have clear coated aluminum rims, some of those will make spots in the clear coat that is very difficult to get out.

RE: Brake Replacement Question

Thank you all for your timely replies. I am scheduled Tuesday for a brake check/pad replacement if
my mech. deems necessary. I believe I will go with the Ceramic pads as my most important criteria is
the lack of brake dust/noise vs stopping power. (I really don't race that much at all.) Thank you all
for your opinions. I appreciate it.
