center console trim piece

Hi all....The center console plastic trim piece, which forms the top of the console..... the piece that the glove box door lays on and also engulfs the gearshifter (95 vette) has a black film bonded to the outside to give it it's finished look........PROBLEM.....that film is peeling. Does anyone know anyone that can strip and refinish it...... Checked with the dealer and the piece new is very expensive......HELP!!!!!!! any suggestions.......

RE: center console trim piece

i know what you mean. mine felt tacky to the touch and was peeling around some of the edges. so i stripped that black film like coating off of mine and it is glossy black plastic now. i will probably take it to work and paint it though. not decided yet if im going gloss or flat. its easy to stip but very time consuming. i put mine in my parts washer and let it soak and it started to come off. took alot of rubbing and soaking though. the parts washer solution does not harm the plastic at all. if you need help just let me know

This is common with the console. Myself, I removed the console peice, sanded it with fine water- type sand paper to a feather edge finish, primed it with primer for plastic and sprayed it with a (GM) egg-shell finish. It looks like new! It takes awhile to do but the results are great.
