Charging AC
 

I have an 87, that does not blow cold air. I believe it just needs the system charged. Can i buy the needed materials at a parts store or should i take it to a place specializing in AC?

You can do it yourself, with some pieces from the auto parts retailer.

If you wanna' try, I'll be glad to post pics of how-to.

Has it already been converted to 134?

I am pretty sure the r12 is illegal to use in any state. If it has not been converted you will need to get that done first. Kinda pricey. If you don't know if they are reliable they also will try to tell you that your blower is shot etc... A friend of mine got screwed before I could stop him[:'(]

I converted my '87 from 12 to 134 at the house.

If you still are on 12, and don't wanna' change over, don't put it in without gettin' a leak check first. 12 is expensive at advance auto here.

If you're gonna' switch over, you can buy that kit there also.

Im pretty sure its still on 12. Im posting this for my grandfather, and he is kinda anal about things, which might be why it only 41K miles. haha. Hes adamant about paying someone else to do it. But i told him we can do it cheaper and in the garage.

So yall are saying it needs to be converted to 134 or i can put 12 in?

PS im not up to date on AC systems.

Yes, you can re-fill with R12, if available to the public where you are. Some states don't sell to the public, I guess. Since it is about5 times the price of R134, don't put more in until you'vechecked forleaks.

Conversion can be done at home with the conversion kits. I did it on my '87, and did a double flush, just to make sure (of course, you'll have to check the charge nipple to see if any R12 is in the system. Don't hold the little pin in the charge nipple down too long, with a handtool, because all the old stuff might get out, that has to come out anyway. Gitme?;)).

Run through a can of the conversion flush, then another is probably better, and drain. Then, put in the lubricating oil first, and one can of R134, and check pressure. Put in more as necessary.

If he's already on 134, you can put in a can without necessarily checkin' for leaks first - it's cheap enough...

Sorry not on the right subject just joined today and cant figure out how to start a new post have a possible overheating problem and dont know where to start!
