cylinder head ft lbs.

Installed the heads back on my 89. The Chilton manual calls for the long bolts to be torqued to 60-75 and the short bolts 55-65. is thisa range, or should the final be 75 and 65? Seems strange that the bolts have a different torque setting. Right now I have all bolts set at 65, doI increase the long bolts to 75?

RE: cylinder head ft lbs.

interesting question.just checked a chilton manual i have and it says 45 onthe first pass,74 on the second and 118 on the final and does not differentiate between aluminium and cast heads or long and short bolts. The haynes manual says 65 cast iron long and short,65 long 60 short with aluminium. My mercruiser manuals(350 small block) go with the 118 cast iron!!
When I rebuilt my stroker I went with the lower(65) settings and nothings popped yet 'tho it seemed very low to me.Thats aluminium heads.

:DYour looking at the Vin J engine, mines the Vin 8. Thanks for the comments. The Vin J motor were biult by mecury marine, they need
lots of torque to hold those puppies together.
