Fluid Change
 

I have a 96 LT4 that has 34000 miles on it. I know for a fact that the tranny and rear end lube has never been changed and GM says that it doesn't have to be. I would think after 13 years that it wouldn't hurt. Also, what about spark plugs and wires. What are some of the opinions on this? I would think that there are much better lubes out there now.Any recommendations?

If you dont drive underwater or race on the weekends dont bother the change. Just check and top off w/ factory recommended fluids. The factory fluids are some of the best for the every day driving.But if you want to go by the book the owners manual the car came w/ with has a service schedule.The wires are a matter of having them changed if the are causing a performance issue. They could last 100k miles and never cause a problem. The plugs- could not hurt if you change them, but my money says they are probaly ok if the motor is running ok.

On the plugs, I was concerned about the siezing that might happen since they have been in there so long. I also heard that if pull the wire, that there is a good possibility that you might wreck it. The car runs fine, just thinking about preventative maintance.

There is a tool that looks likes a pair of duck bill pliers used to pull the wires at the boot. The plugs getting stuck is a hit or miss, use a little neversez when you to the change out.

I gotta' agree with yankee.. Although vacuum lines can dryrot, the systems you refer to are sealed - rearend fluid, plugs, wires. Tranny fluid could separate or gum up - do the fluid and filter for the tranny, and check vacuum hoses.
