RE: radio aftermarket
If you go aftermarket you will need to read and complete the TSB on it or you will get an SYS message on your speedo.

RE: radio aftermarket
Are you sure the factory unit is toast? How 'bout the speakers?

RE: radio aftermarket
Not sure if the '93 is the same but...I did it in my '87. It works fine as long as I don't run the volume up on the head unit too far. It has it's own amp and in conjunction with the speaker amps the extra power will make the speakers cut out. It took all of about 20 minutes to do and the only problem was finding the main power wire to the speaker amps with no wiring diagram. That was 15 minutes alone, LOL! It turned out to be a pink wire and once hooked to a source,(stereo antenna power feed), It worked great.I did it in the parking lot of the stereo store I bought the dash panelkit from. No problems to date. (knock on wood). Not very technical but .....

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new (aftermarket) stereo, he will need to do the following: 1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.] 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 3. Remove the receiver. 4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car) 5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car. 6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car. 7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors. 8. Reconnect the negative battery cable. |
RE: radio aftermarket
The '93 must be different then the '87. I haven't had any problems with mine and used no resistors. Good luck with it.

RE: radio aftermarket
Mine is a Kenwood. Actually it's a "marine" stereo but I really don't think that matters. Just a little more expensive at full retail because it says "Marine" on the box. It's exactly like the one in my truck and so is the dang box with the exception of the word "Marine"., and that looks alittle fishy to me. No pun intended.

RE: radio aftermarket
OK, I am truly looking for some help here..91 Vette with aftermarket Pioneer and I would like to know the following:
What wires are you all refering to per the discussion? 5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car. 6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car. Are these the dimmer and illumination wires? Thx in advance! :D |
RE: radio aftermarket
I wish I could help you Drojt, I've only had experience with the older stuff, before computerized auto's, things were pretty straight forward then. Someone will come up with an answer but I think folks are still having trouble posting and replying.

RE: radio aftermarket
Thx All..but I think that I finally got it figured out. The resistors correlate to the dimmer and illumination leads. After inserting the resistors (per the diagram), the infamous 'sys' went away but came back after 20 miutes of driving. I think that one of the leads may have a short in or my battery may be on its' last leg so I am reconfiguring the cabling or replacing the batterythis weekend. Thx again for the reply. BTW, I installed a Pioneer AVIC D3 system....it fits the double din easily and looks great! Enjoy and Yes Yes a thousand times yes.....more computers! :D

RE: radio aftermarket
i also have a question but this isnt about installing an aftermarket radio its about the amps in the stock bose speakers in a 91 vette, i read somewhere that the capacitors on the amps are usually the first thing to go bad if i were to replace the capacitors with ones i buy at radioshack and solder them in would that fix it or is there more than the capacitor that goes bad "commonly"
