Rear main seal replacment

Arethere any tricks or obsticles to avoid in replacing the rear main oil seal on a 1996 LT1 vette with an automatic transmission? Also, what would be the best manual to use?

RE: Rear main seal replacment

A friend of mind had a race car w/ a rear main leak and he put some 'Lucas" power steering stop leak in the oil and he said it worked w/o any ill effects. Note make sure that the leak is not the valve covers or the distributor because it will keep leaking. A good manual is haynes, but the better one is the factory GM manual which can be found on E bayfrom time to time.

RE: Rear main seal replacment

Welcome to the forums there young...

If it is the rear main, and it's leaking, consider it a good thing. That means there's not a bunch of motor jam in it at the seals - especially the bottom end - which would otherwise keep it from leaking. All the more reason to make sure of what it is, and get it done right, if they ARE leaking...

By the way, those pre-flush solvents, used before oil changes, sometimes actually DO solve deposits, and allow a leak to start. That's why some less tech savy types to say, "Don't use it - it eats seals."

Always look at the good side of the problem..........
