speaker question

Hi guys, I just bought new speakers for the back of my 1985 vette. They went in just fine, but the one on the right is making a weird smell. Why is it doing this? I know this isn't normal. I just connected the speaker right up to that "thing" that is connected to the old Bose speaker. Any advice anyone can give me would be great! Thanks!

RE: speaker question

If I recall correctly, the Bose system consisted of speakers with the amplifiers built in. Did you use original replacement BOSE speakers or are these non-amplified speakers from another manufacturer?
I'm not very familiar with the '85 vintage C4 stereo systems.

See if this has any info you can use.

RE: speaker question

I replaced the speakers with Pioneer 3-ways, I just hooked them back up to the old bose amplifier. I didn't know any other way to do it.

i believe you have to change all the speakers and the head unit if you want to change speakers. this was a topic before i believe.

RE: speaker question

YES U DO HAVE TO CHANGE THE WHOLE SYSTEM OUT IF U ARE GOING TO USE AFTERMARKET SPEAKERS.WHAT U WERE SMELLING WAS THE TWEETER SMOKING.EACH SPEAKER HAS ITS OWEN AMP.MAKE SHURE YOU CONNECT + TO + AND - TO - IF U DONT U WILL BLOW THE SPEAKERS,IF U WANT TO RUN AFTERMARKET SPEAKERS U WILL NEED TO CHANGE THE HEAD OUT AND BUY A AMP AND RCA CABLES,4 GAGE WIRE FUSE BLOCKS, SPEAKERS, AND MUCH MORE.

RE: speaker question

I worked on consumer electronics for over 30 years, and BOSE always had some of the strangest designed on the market. The home speakers early-on used the same type of technology in about the same time frame, the BOSE 901's had an equalizer amp you had to use in between the stereo receiver and the 901. I'm going to take the wiring harness out of my 84" and run speaker calbe 14 guage directly to the speaker terminals, I have installed a SONY after-market 50 watts per channel unit. If you don't dis-engage the built-on amps there is a chance you could damage the outputs on any other type of car stereo receiver
