Starter won't stop.

Every now and than when I turn off the ignition the starter motorstarts cranking and will not stop unless I go ahead and letthe engine start. Turn off engine and starter starts cranking again. Had to disconnect battery stop it. Soundlike a relay? What doyou guys think? Dave

RE: Starter won't stop.

Hi LT4Dave, at first thought it sounded like the ignition switch was hanging up but if I understand correctly your telling us that the starter stops cranking when the engine starts. If that is the case then I'd say you have a logic problem, something is telling the computer to start the engine and it's responding normally. Now I don't have experience with the C4, If you are trying to start the engine in a normal fashion will the starter keep turning as long as you turn the key to the start position?, or doe's the starter stop once the engine starts?

Alot of GM vehicles past and present have the actual starting switch at the base of the steering colum. Most are a sliding relay moved by a lever rod. If it jams, (maybe in cold weather), thats your problem.Try starting the car in neutral and if the starter stays on pop it in drive and see if the neutral safety switch cancels the power to start curcuit or same w/ the clutch pedal. If the starter still keeps a uncommanded cycle going thenit (could be)the starter solonoid on the starter its self is bad. Please be careful its not hard to burn out something from overcranking a starter. good luck.

Thanks for info. When it happens, the starter keeps cranking when I kill the engine. It doesn't matter what position the ignition switch is in. It stops if start the engine. Happens infrequently. Stops if I disconnect battery. Will keep going if I reconnect battery. Stops for no reason. Dave

I guess I would check out the ignition switch and starter solenoid first, should only cost you a little time to begin with. My inclination would be the solenoid. You can check it by disconnecting the low current wire that comes from the starter switch or relay, hook up a remote starter button and crank it from that set-up, if the starter wont shut off then it's the solenoid at fault. Test it repeatedly until your satisfied with your findings.
