transmission repair
I lost the fluid in my 84'. I changed the fluid and filter but won't shift into 2n and 3rd, this is the 700 r 4 automatic.
My question is would it be better to take it to the local Chevy dealer or go aftermarket repairs. I know the dealer would probably be more expensive, but sometimes factory authorzied service gets the job done right and addressess any factory bulletins and upgrades.. |

IMO, take it to a trans shop. The dealership would have to knock33yrsofdust off their manuals, and charge ya for the dust. :D

lol. Yea...Take it to a trans shop and have it rebuilt. Your clutch pack probably got shot. These transmissions are naturally weak from the factory and being driven hard and age just kills them that much faster. They only approximiatley 100,000 miles.....in that ballpark range....Goodluck.

I had the auto trans redone in my 92 by the dealer in April. Thats where members of the local Corvette club told me to take it. They did a great job and it shifts smooth as silk.

I spoke with my local Chevrolet dealership about rebuilding the transmission in my 1990 Corvette. Their story was that they don't rebuild transmissions as rebuilt transmissions only have the worn parts replaced. According to dealership, they use remanufactured transmissions that have all new internals. In other words, you don't get your original transmission back and your car is no longer "numbers matching" which may or may not be a big deal depending on the owner of the car.
Long story short - I had my transmission rebuilt by a local Aamco shop. |

On the other hand, if it shifts from 1st to 3rd, and you don't have overdrive, you've probably lost the 'bands', which are the same for 2nd and OD. This frequently is from high-mileage city driving, with the selector in OD. Many GM sedans with the TH700 have owner's manual that says city drivin' should be done with the tranny selctor in '3', for this reason. |
